Dropped off my b18 block at a local speed shop about a month ago. I was looking to build a reliable boosted engine for an EG project that I'm undergoing here over the next year or so. Well, I finally got the call today that it's all ready to go. I asked him what the tab was and he said with everything, $3100. My jaw dropped to the floor.....they cleaned it up/disassembled it, sleeved, forged Wiseco pistons, replaced the crank bearings, and I believe polished/turned the crank. I'm also picking up a built LS head with a 3 angle valve job, Crower turbo cams, BDL cam gears, Skunk springs/retainers, titanium valves, and I think that's all. So here's the tally:

Turbonetics turbo kit (fmic, ssq bov, piping) - $1500
Built head - $1300
Wiseco piston kit - $478

I've already paid for the turbo kit, so take that out of the bill. I still have to get injectors, fuel pump, and some lines/fittings, but that's no big deal. So the head and the pistons come to about $1800. Does $1300 sound right for the machining and s**t? I have to put it back together myself too, which is cool with me because I wanted to kind of "build" it myself anyways. But I feel like somewhere along the line i'm getting hosed. Is machine work really that expensive? Anyone clue me in?

Thanks in advance.

So you're paying 1300 to have someone clean and sleeve your block and polish the crank?

i say with the block work + having them assemble it for you would probably run you about $800.. i got quoted on machining my sohc block and it ran around the lines of 300 bucks..

Sleeving runs around 1100 dollars for a high end job around here I believe, so 200 more for machine work isn't bad at all is it?

what is everything that it included, what parts, and what labor was done?

as i understand it, the block was sleeved, crank was machined, and he sold you pistons, and bearings but didnt put it together?

1300 sounds right for machining the block and crank.

Well I tried getting ahold of dude today but no answer. As far as parts included all that's on the invoice was "Wiseco piston kit". I forgot to mention that the cylinders were also honed. Since I haven't been able to talk to the guy today, I can't really say exactly what services were performed other than sleeving, honing, checking clearances (i forgot about that too), and polishing the crank. Unless he forgot to take off the turbo kit and this price includes all my headstuds, rod bolts, gaskets, etc., my shop mechanics at work think I'm getting f**ked....and one of these mechanics has a fully built 'cuda. What can i possibly be missing?

dude, if you only new the build cost of my setup you'd pay that $3100 and wouldnt mention another word about it...

around here that's a damn great price. sleeving my block alone was $1100. i have $4000 in the turbo setup

Yea, if that 1300 or whatever you said they wanted, included sleeving, that sounds pretty fair.

it vary's depending on shop and location. The shop i work at would have been damn close to what you paid. Theres alot more work in spec'n , cleaning and machining then most people think. And at our shop rate ($60/hr) that will add up quick. Now dont get me wrong most shops have a set price on machining operations but once again it can add up quick. What i've learned is that only get done what is impossible for you to do your self.
