Hi guys,

I am a real noob to the civic scene and wanted to introduce myself as I will be the one asking all the questions.
The main reason why I am posting on forced induction is because all I have owned my whole life is turbo cars until my `96 Civic coupe.
I want to ask has many people turbo changed a D16Y8? If so is it hard? and is there anything I need to know?
I all am not sure how much I will need to spend I saw that there was a thread about the costing and that did help a bit.

Cheers Joel

alot of people have boosted there d series...hard...no. well if youve own turbo cars befor you should already know the basics. just keep the boost pressure around 7-10psi on a d series motor, with a good tune shell be a spunky little b***h

Thanks dude. Yeah I have a fair Idea on what i am doing. Main question is are there and tricky bits like....... Oil feed line or oil return line. anything that other people have had problems with?

there are dyi's on here and on other sites that have very good information too. the oil feed line can be t'ed into your oil pressure sensor, oil return line can be fabbed into your stock oil pan, or moroso makes aftermarket pans. honda motors do not like boost, or possitive intake manifold pressure. so you will have to get a missing link, or have your stock ecu chipped to bypass the map sensor. as of the overall motor, weak rod, weak cylinder walls that are prone to "walking". as long as your boost does not exceed 7-10, and you have a good tune you will be fine

^ :word:

a y8 can make 200 whp reliably as a daily driver even with the weaker motor internals

PSI doesn't matter each turbo makes a different HP on each PSI.

A good tune is probably the most important part of your car when boosting.

well no s**t neoc......not going to list 500 different turbo and boost pressure ratings with all of them. 7-10 was just used as a vague response

I really do appreciate the advise so far, I have figured out so far that d16y8 computers dont like Positive intake (boost) and that the engines are weak. So in theory if I put a turbo on, ran 5 pound would the car run ok with standard tune? Would the engine detinate?
Are there any decent packages that can be brought of Ebay?

plain and simple.....stay away from ebay "kits". they are niether complete nor do they fit. almost all of them have shitty components and bad turbos.

So if not Ebay would you have any suggestions about where to get one from and on a standard computer would it run with out detination on 5 or so pound?

Honestly your best bet is to piece one together yourself. You will save a whole lot of money, and end up with exactly the parts you need for your specific application. http://www.homemadeturbo.com/ is a good resource site. Also if your going with boost and adding significant hp the last thing you want to do is lean out. If your going to go through the trouble of setting up boost. I would recommend going the full way and getting and OBD1 computer chipped and tuned. Your car will run amazingly better (under boost) and give you extra peace of mind as far as avoiding detonation.

I should have pointed out that its better for people to get HP goals on their current builds rather than PSI ratings.

okay ladies, lets keep it down now..

5psi and a tune, is perfect for stock internals. now, im not saying any higher wouldnt be perfect but with 5 being such a low number, what harm can it do? its not like your engine is fully built, nor do you have 12 cylinders, nor is it 1000hp stock.

theres quite a few people with d16y8 i know stock boost running up to 10psi on a t3/t4 turbo, with no problems. it just depends on the turbo your using and the condition your motor is in, and tune. goodluck! ;)

with a typical small trim turbo 7psi is an all round good figure for a bone stock y8. yes it does need to be tuned, the stock fuel map does not support positive mani pressure. most people get an obd1 ecu and have it chipped and tuned with neptune, crome, or something of the sort. or you can go the fancier route and get a complete stand-alone ecu and have it professionally dyno tuned. i do not recommend using a piggy-back controller for boost like vafc

Unreal, Thank you so much guys.

So I guess I should start looking for an exhaust mani and turbo to start with.
Is there any particular place I should start looking to purchase one?
A lot of people have mentioned T3/T4, Is this the most common way to start?

alot of people use first gen dsm turbos, bovs, and injectors. as of the mani....not sure. some people use stock honda manis....hx model i think. someone else could help you with that tho, i just found out about that recently. as of everything else piping and so on....that will need to be fabbed
