10-15 min is just a waste of gas. Its starting to get to the high 20's low 30's around here and i've found that 5 min is just enough to do the job. sometimes less.
Waste of gas? That's hardly any gas being wasted... Plus, you got to pay to play!

I heard somewhere that at Idle, your car is very susceptible to damage since oil pressure isn't very high when idling for long periods of time.

Anyone else heard that?

My buddy who told me is a VW certified tech. I know he still could be wrong but I do trust him for the most part.

Anything more then "you're wrong" would be useful.

If the car is in perfect running condition, the engine shouldn't be damaged during long idle. Unless, the car is infact idling for possibly hours and hours (I would say at least 5+hrs) you would expect to feel some damage, but very minimal. At idle, your vehicle is running at it's lowest horsepower and torque ouput thus creating a much lesser need for gas, oil, air, etc... The vehicles PCM will notice any effects and changes in the engine and would compensate for any changes necessary.

Think about it this way, let's say you're in Houston, Tx; Hurricane Ike is about to hit, and everyone's stuck in traffic waiting to leave up north. Half of the people in traffic would tend to leave their vehicles on, and idling. While the smarter half would turn off the car to save gas. Let's look at the people with their vehicles on and idling. They are most likely stuck in one position for at least an hour before they get to move what, 1 feet ahead. During this time, the computer controls the air/fuel intake to a minimum, why? Because you're not moving! Blah blah blah... Blah blah blah...

Now, I can understand why your friend said it was bad; this is how, and it's very possible in our older vehicles. If the car is idling, lets say 5 hours, there is a possibility that the oil pressure is not high enough to pump oil through the engine. This can cause lack of lubrication. Just like anal, if you lack lubrication, it's going to hurt. The only reason why the pressure wouldn't be high in the first place would be because the car is at idle and the RPMs are usually around 600-900. Etc... Blah blah blah, blah blah blah...

Now, go out in your car and try this. Turn your car on, and let it idle... Let it idle for a good 10 minutes or so, now every once in a while, you'll see your RPM needle move slightly either UP or DOWN. This is, as you know, your revolutions per minute blah blah. The computer notices whenever it drops, or increases and tunes your car to be at the set idle. Everything else all goes together, your oil pump, your fuel pump, your injectors, your stroke, your rpm, everything all works together to either increase or decrease the velocity and viscosity.

Yea, it's not really detailed, I just half assed explained everything, but hopefully you get the idea of knowing that if the engine is barely working, there's no need for any (SAT word here), and when the engine is working it's ass off, then it'll need some extra (SAT word here) to compensate for the harsh condition it's in.

*Thus, it can't really be bad or good, it just depends on the vehicle and condition it's in.

i wait at most a minute, usually about 30 seconds. i keep my revs out of boost until i'm at operating temperature. the engine will warm up faster getting driven than just idling anyway. in the winter i'll waste gas and let the interior warm up lol

and that's why multiple sets of keys are important. that way you can have the car running AND have the doors locked while you're gone.

just get a power inverter and plug in a space heater or put a hair dryer on the dash pointing at you lol

My start was fail proof in my civic.

In order for it to work I had to hit a button on the remote before exiting the car, close the door w/car running (obviously you need it in neutral to walk out w/car on) and hit a button to arm/turn car off.

If you opened the door autostart wouldn't work.

If alarm went off autostart wouldn't work.

so it was dummy proof as you can see ;)

i remote started my car last year and it tried driving through my garage door.

now i dont have remote start hooked up anymore because of the swap.

i dont drive my car in the cold, but i usually try to let it warm up until it hits operating temp before i really start driving it.

it's flat here in indiana. i don't even park my car in gear. handbrake is fine. back in chile, though, i'd always leave it in 2nd.

Yea, it sucks my house is on a hill and my driveway is a hill.... Sometimes I'll park outside and leave it in gear.
