wow alex, sounds like you really enjoying this.....
It has its ups & downs.
Today was pretty nice.
6hr day of boat = ftw
but...staring at computer screen on rocky boat = ftl
and...sorting 40 indians into each of their groups = ftmfl
doing this all again tomorrow, without the boss = ft...? At least the money's better than shore duty.
After we got back, stll had to shoot 2 boats and sell 3.
During first boat sale, some f**ker knocked into the board, knocking my light on the ground = smashy.
Then this group of injins wanted two $10 shots for $5. b***h, I already knocked it down $5 for each, be happy. So they cheap out and go for one...and pay with a $20 anyway
At least the light was salvagable. Took the cover off, put bulb/tube/whatever back on end posts, worked, saved me a few bucks.
alex. why dont you use a reflector or a diffuser instead of using flash. you guys are shooting in super sunnny conditions. i dont think there is a need to use flash at all. and if that dude shot that with a 30d he needs to stop taking photos for the rest of his life. a ps can do a better job. its not the camera its the photographer.
put the reflector below and in front of the subject with the sun behind them and to the side so it gives them some rim/hair light. the reflector should take care of filling in the shadows in the front of their faces. also a diffuser above their heads and a bit to the front will make the sunlight a lot smoother for the shot.
Thought about it, but A) he doesn't have one yet and B) wouldn't be very practical.
We usually hit a boat by ourselves.
Get in position before customers board, get their gear, we shoot.
Get through the line-up, and it's either on to the next boat or back to the office to edit/print before returning when the boat does to sell the shots. Can't really be running around with a reflector and/or diffuser, etc.
x2 for 'not cam, photog'. Same gear, almost same time of day, way better shots imo.
^^
Thats a good point. Remember...the sun can be counted as a light too..... Usally if its sunny and you want to use flash, you'll have to be in a shaded area, where the background is lit by the sun, etc. You could also shoot at 1/200 of a sec, with a f/stop of f/16+ to kill the ambient light but, those pocket strobes aren't any where near powerful enough for that.
I'll be back on the boat tomorrow, I'll probably try some new stuff just to get some ideas.
