wow alex, sounds like you really enjoying this.....:rolf:
It has its ups & downs.

Today was pretty nice.
6hr day of boat = ftw
but...staring at computer screen on rocky boat = ftl
and...sorting 40 indians into each of their groups = ftmfl

doing this all again tomorrow, without the boss = ft...? At least the money's better than shore duty.

After we got back, stll had to shoot 2 boats and sell 3.
During first boat sale, some f**ker knocked into the board, knocking my light on the ground = smashy.
Then this group of injins wanted two $10 shots for $5. b***h, I already knocked it down $5 for each, be happy. So they cheap out and go for one...and pay with a $20 anyway

At least the light was salvagable. Took the cover off, put bulb/tube/whatever back on end posts, worked, saved me a few bucks.
alex. why dont you use a reflector or a diffuser instead of using flash. you guys are shooting in super sunnny conditions. i dont think there is a need to use flash at all. and if that dude shot that with a 30d he needs to stop taking photos for the rest of his life. a ps can do a better job. its not the camera its the photographer.

put the reflector below and in front of the subject with the sun behind them and to the side so it gives them some rim/hair light. the reflector should take care of filling in the shadows in the front of their faces. also a diffuser above their heads and a bit to the front will make the sunlight a lot smoother for the shot.
Thought about it, but A) he doesn't have one yet and B) wouldn't be very practical.

We usually hit a boat by ourselves.
Get in position before customers board, get their gear, we shoot.
Get through the line-up, and it's either on to the next boat or back to the office to edit/print before returning when the boat does to sell the shots. Can't really be running around with a reflector and/or diffuser, etc.

x2 for 'not cam, photog'. Same gear, almost same time of day, way better shots imo.
^^

Thats a good point. Remember...the sun can be counted as a light too..... Usally if its sunny and you want to use flash, you'll have to be in a shaded area, where the background is lit by the sun, etc. You could also shoot at 1/200 of a sec, with a f/stop of f/16+ to kill the ambient light but, those pocket strobes aren't any where near powerful enough for that.
I'll be back on the boat tomorrow, I'll probably try some new stuff just to get some ideas.

Indians = cheapasses..
Damn skippy!

I was also wondering if someone could tell me how to apply the same camera raw settings to multiple images using adobe bridge. Hopefully someone knows! Thanks in advance.

i dont know much about it, but you could get 2 of the 480ex or w/e the flashes are for canon, and get some wireless triggers. you can take some awesome pics with those, then you can get stands with the umbrellas and point those flashes at them. there are many ways to get into that. i just started with a regular hot shoe flash because it can get really really expensive

http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-a-TI-Graphing-Calculator-into-an-Intervalomet

lets you use a TI-83 graphing calculator as an intervalometer for your camera. you can use it to take time lapse videos, i'm going to use it to take star trail pictures (just set it to take x amount of 30 second exposures adding up to an hour). :D

looks sweet. now if only my calculator wasn't locked up at school :(

Here's one from today.

Coutts - Get yourself a couple vivitar 285hv's with cactus v2 triggers and be sure to get the PC Sync cords with them. They fire better with the sync cords rather than the hot shoes on the v2 triggers. Then just get some 7' stands, a 33" and 43" white umbrella's or large softboxes and you'll be good to go.

Start by getting used to the DSLR first, then lean into flash.

Another good day, sorta. Boat ftw, and once again, indians ftl.

coutts: i would start with a 430exII or a 580exII. a nice flash should be before any lens really. if you want to start building studio lighting/photography. get some bg paper so you can have that continous background color. then you can get a stand and fabricate your own diy softbox if you want to save money. also get a justing clamp for your flash so you can take your flash off camera and clip anywhere around your shot. you should be able to get pretty good shots with just one flash and a reflector. the main thing is you want the light not come directly at your subject without it being diffused someway.

i am in my black and white phase
