Hey ppl.

I have a 2000 Civic Si (thats an EX 2 door for those down south) in auto. I bought it used in May, and the past week, it started losing a lotta power (regardless of what gear im in). noticeable amounts. If i floor it, it just wont go, it'll be very very laggy. Also, VTec wont kick in. and the shift outta 1st into 2nd is a rough one. and engine is much louder at higher rpm's.

I had a friend of mine who owns a body shop (they also have a mechanic on hand) to check if it was the cat, since i have a broken/loose baffle in there. They disconnected the cat, started it up, and same issue.
They also checked the distributer cap, rotor, those were fine (just replaced in the summer). and the spark plugs were fine too (replaced along with the distribution cap).
It's also been drinking gas like mad lately.

So they were unable to proceed with a diagnosis, so they told me to goto honda. Honda says its my tranny. It failed the stall test, 1st gear was slipping and so it just shifted to 2nd during the stall test (according to honda)

Mods:
Cat-back
SRI (currently)

Here's a summary....

Problems:
- no power (regrardless of gear)
- shifting outa 1st into 2nd is rough
- engine louder
- drinking gas.

Diagnostics done:
- cat and back is fine, no blockage
- not distribution cap
- spark plugs fine
- intake fine (according to Honda)
- Timing is fine (according to honda)

My question is does this sound right to you? Tranny?
One problem i thought was, it might be the EGR valve. but i havnt had time to check that.. since its been freezing here the past few days.. not to mention mad crazy busy with Christmas.

D16Y8's dont have EGR valves, so it cant be that. It could possibly be the tranny slipping. Do a compression test to see if your building compression. A compression tester can be had at any parts store, for a reasonable price (I think I payed like $20 for mine). Do a compression test, and get back to us.

do what ej6civic27 said .. do the compression test very simple.. once you get that, if you have low numbers, average is like 250 .. so if you get low low numbers what you should do is pour about a 20 oz bottle's lid with motor oil and dump it into each of the chambers where the spark plugs go, then redo the test, if the numbers are back up, then it could possibly be your piston rings, if not, potentially a blown headgasket or something wrong with your valvetrain. An easy read on checking for a blown headgasket, open the oil fill cap and/or the radiator cap and see if you see oil in the radiator or coolant in the head. If it is your valvetrain, it could possibly be a bent valve. If you need any other information PM me bro

Update:

So, i got the compression tester for $25 in the US. Im back home now, havnt had time to test the compression. BUT yesterday when i went to get snow's installed, my transmission started to slip outta 3rd, and 4th will only accellerate to 70kph, and then it struggles to go faster (it will, just no power).

Gonna put in some Lucas Oil Transmission stuff tomorrow, hope that'll make it last a bit while i track down a tranny. sigh.

i think it might be the sparks ckeck them and also the wires they dont cost much and you can do it yourself. but yeah check those things.

UPDATE!

i got a friend that works at a shop to swap my tranny with another auto i got a hold of off another friend. Total cost was under $620cnd for the tranny, oil, and 6 hrs labour.

The car DRIVES AMAZING now. the loss of engine power isnt really noticeable anymore. but there still is a bit of throttle response laggyness. but i thnk an oil change, and a new pcv valve will do the trick =) i dont think i'll need to do the compression test anymore, not until the spring/summer. thanks for the help guys, esp onesikEJ8, thanks for answering my questions bro!!
