Europeans have once again proven they get all the spiffy hatches. This time around it's the latest Civic Si five-door from Honda hitting UK dealerships next month. It looks like the current track-oriented Type-R model, but comes with the regular Si engine offerings and can be had for quite a bit less cash. It's a Type-R on a budget, if you will, aimed at the young and hip who are low on the funds.
Its exterior gets athletic touches like body-colored bumpers, fog lights, 17-in. wheels, Type-R-like mesh grille, and dark chrome door handles and fuel door. Its fascia with sleek headlights and bigger lower grille looks starkly like the more performance-tuned Type-R we've come to desire this side of the Atlantic.
Inside, passengers are treated to a cabin in half-leather. There are all the usual bells and whistles, like a CD player/radio, air conditioning, electric windows, and now, a USB port for iPod connectivity.
Another bonus for prospective European Si buyers that we don't see in the U.S. is a range of engine offerings, which include 1.4L (coming later this year) and 1.8L gasoline engines and a 2.2L diesel, mated to either a a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic (the 1.4L get's Honda's i-Shift transmission in place of the standard five-speed auto) . With the manual on board, the 1.4L should net at least 40 mpg, depending on the transmission, while the 1.8L Si five-door gets a claimed 35 mpg combined. The bigger diesel with a manual 'box garners a claimed 44 mpg combined.
