Hello everybody. I guess to start, my name is Alex. I own three cars, two 1979 Porsche 924's, and I have recently (like a week ago) bought a 89' Honda Civic HB Si. I have been around cars my whole life, and I know quite a lot about them. Unfortunatly, most of the stuff I know is about V8's and Porsche engines lol. Now I hate to do this on my first post, but I was hoping you guys could answer/help me with a few things on my new civic. It has a D16A6 with 200000 miles on it (). But, ocassionally (and randomly) it will run nice and smoothly, then out of nowheres "bog down" and will run like crap till i get past 2000rpm. It also smokes a LOT when I drive heavy on the gas. Any easy fix for that? The Check Engine light will also come on randomly-and its really annoying. Where would be a good place to start with that? The O2 sensor? Thanks for reading ;)

Sounds like the seals on the engine are going out. With it smoking alot if its smoke a crap ton while driving its most likely the piston Rings or the Headgasket. More than likely you will need to tear apart the engine and replace piston rings and headgasket. Also your valve cover gasket might be a issue to. Dont take all these suggestions serious but it just to me sounds like your engine needs a over haul. Mine is getting new bearings and piston rings...possibly more. Mine smokes alot too but thats cause of the piston rings.

I would just replace the engine and maybe tranny too if I were you. You can probably find one for cheap if you want the same motor unless you want to rebuild and go that way.

I was afraid it might be the Headgasket or the rings...Well, I guess its time to start saving up for a new motor then. Cuz for the time and money it takes to rebuild the motor, I could pick up a nice B series V-tec for it. Thanks for the info guys ;)

I've seen d16a6's (motor in your si) go for pretty cheap! Around a $100 bucks usually. Save up a few more hundred and you could get a z6 or something similar.

Wow, that really isn't that much. Right now i'm really glad I have a honda with cheep parts lol. Last Night I decoded the ECU and I found out my Oxygen sensor is registering problems, and my manifold is at maximum pressure , so i really do need to get on the smoking issue..I guess its time for a compression check :x

Honda parts CAN be cheap. Not all the time will they be that cheap, but they can be. As for your problem, it would be one of these three that I can think of

Rings going bad
bad seals on the head
bad seals and a leaky spark plug hole sucking in oil.

either way I would rebuild the bottom end, throw a Y8 head on it ( with a port / polish ) and go from there. the Y8 head will give you more power (plus vtec yo haha) and the port will increase some power.
