We're kind of in the same boat here. I fried my piston rings, broke the axles and destroyed the tranny on my teggy. It's a pain in the ass trying to find a good cheap b16/gsr tranny...
One thing I suggest is get the head checked by a machine shop and make sure it isn't warped when you replace the headgasket. It'll cost you around $100-150 bucks but it could save you money in the long run.

Automatic tranny going out. It is kind of a blessing though because it will be a good reason to swap to a manual tranny

axles are like less than a $100 for the pair. but dont buy rebuilt ones from autozone or an auto parts store like them. Ive only heard bad things from their rebuilt s**t. I bought a rebuilt starter, rebuilt in mexico. No disrespect or anything, but mexico aint the place i want anything mechanical to be rebuilt.

What a waste of money! At least get an LS it'll cost you just as much if not less! What's wrong with your motor anyways? I can see how the head can be f**ked up from a headgasket but the bottom should be fine, no?
If you really want to stick with a d-series just look on craigslist, people do swaps and try to sell their Ds for dirt cheap!

If if you can get an B18a/b motor for like $1,000 off someone from Honda-tech, you can get a d-series motor for $500 or less
same thing from like www.hmotorsonline.com — B18b = $2,000 --- JDM D15b $550 (another $200 for tranny if you need it)
Not that I don't agree with you, at least get an B18b motor cuz u have options from there (b18b/vtec, b18 turbo)

I actually got two offers for $3500 and one for $3300 from craigslist. I know if I wait a little more I can get what I'm asking or something really close to it, that's how it always works out for me. The second I sell something to a lowballer I get an email telling me that someone is willing to pay the full price. I'm not in a hurry to sell at all. Posting on honda-tech or b20vtec for that matter probably wasn't a good idea I have to admit that, people on forums like that aren't really looking for low-mileage d-series civics. Craigslist will come through for me though....hopefully.
BTW, I got my LS motor for $300 with close to perfect compression across all cylinders...
dont get the LS! d series for gas or the b-vtec series for fun! the b18b isnt much improvement over the d16y8 in my civic. sucked more gas is all. Looked cool for a while too.
but yeah, if you arent doing much with your car you should get the d series for saving gas. i got nearly 40mpg with my trip to sac for that bbq lol. some good bbq too! I want some of that right now haha.
