The purpose of a rear fog light is to create more visibilty of the vehicle for drivers following the car with the light. I can say first hand that a lot of Mercedes, Audis, and VWs in Germany have them.

found that one at craigslist....for $120 + 20 for gas to pick it up so about $140. cheap
