found this going into work this morning. it's about 3" long, looks kinda like a palmetto bug but this guy has a pointed tip on his abdomen, and large legs. his got big black eyes mounted on the top of his head. i've lived in charleston for 24 years and never seen one like this. no one in my office knows either. i tried searching but can't find anything similar enough to this to make a positive identification..

looks like a big Texas cockroach. Those f**kers fly you know? I don't think it's a stink bug (chinche) unless your fingers smell hard after you pick it up.

but then again, Texas cockroaches have big antennae :???:

jesus what a bunch of pussies! i'm sure whatever it is he can fly; his wings are pretty big. but yeah he doesnt really have any antennae so it's not a cockroach or palmetto bug. my office is pretty close to saltwater marsh so i'm thinking he wandered over here :what:

As you've found out, it's some sort of giant water bug. I read one link that says there's six species in North America.

http://bugguide.net/node/view/13706
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethocerus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belostomatidae#Habits

They will bite btw. Not poisonous or anything, but I've heard it's pretty unpleasant (see the last link that says it's supposed to be one of the more painful insect bites out there). I've handled them before and never been bitten though, so I don't know how common it is.

This site could potentially help anyone if they wan to ID a bug later: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/
