If you like working on cars, then buy the VW.
that way you can fix it three times as often.
That's a fact.!

In my opinion stick with the Honda.... My roommate and boss both had v dubs... They sucked and had a ton of issues...

You have got to be shi**ing me. There is no comparison. I have owned 4 Passat's and I will admit they are great in accidents ( totaled 2 of them - not my fault), but once they get about 80000 to85000 miles they drive you nuts with one repair after another. Very expensive to own if you can't DIY.

I now have two Hondas, an Accord and a '99 Civic with 185000 and still running strong. Regular maintenance is all they have had.

There is no comparison, take it from an experienced owner.Besides, the VW is NOT as fuel efficient. I had both V6's and turbo 4's.

i was gonna get a really nice 01 vw jetta before i got my civic. i found a site that had reviews with pros and cons and EVERY review on the first page(like 200 reviews) people put under the cons that its high maintanince and breaks down too much lol. vw's suck. i dunno if jetta's are like passats but jettas are s**t. i wish i saved the site lol as soon as i seen that i stopped talkin to the guy with the jetta for sale lol

^^ hear the same thing. Old roomie had a v dub and the electrical was nasty, there were alot of problems. Just from what i hear and some of my own experiances, I'd never think about owning one.

German engineering or Japanese simplicity.. I'd take the simplicity...

NOW - if we were talking NEW civic vs NEW VW, that'd be different.. But the generation you speak off, stay with what you've got.

I've worked on almost every make and model, and Volkswagens are almost as bad to work on as Benz's... The VW takes 10 pounds of crap and puts it in a 2.5 pound bag, including their electrical systems. Parts are not cheap and labor hours are high.

Quick 86 hit it on the head. Lots of electrical prob and expen$ive parts and labor. I drove through a puddle and thePassat transmission computer took a s**t...why..cause it is in a deep well under the passenger seat and there was a small hole in the floorboard. Passats are just llike Jetta's only the turd is bigger.

If you do this deal you need mental evaluation. Just read the posts....not ONE says it is a good trade.

IF Quick 86 thinks the new VW vs. the new Honda is any different, he is wrong. My friend is service mangler ( not mis-spelled) for VW and he just shakes his head. The model years might be different but the problems persist.

I love the simplicity of the Honda and yes I do miss the German engineering but I can no longer afford a folly.

My sister has a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6 5 speed and its had zero electrical issues, I have a bunch of friends with MK3's and MK4's and they don't have any electrical issues. I don't see where anyone is coming from with the electrical problems. Otherwise they're expensive when they break, but they don't break very often. I like her Jetta, It's a lot more luxurious than my Honda, a lot faster too.

Edit: Her car has 155,XXX miles on it.

Civics are more reliable. Parts are cheaper. If you're smart, you would make the right decision.

keep your civic dude. to fix anything on a vdub you basically need to think "how would i do this as backwards as possible?" and man the specialty tools needed to fix it arent cheap either.

I haven't been able to play with the new generation Civic, I stopped working for Honda in .... 06?

I've looked under the hood of the new generation Civics and all I can say is owners have no room to talk about accessibility because of a cowl being in the way like my F-Body  It's not much better!

Buuttt, I could be wrong. The 1 thing I love about VW are their diesel's, if only they weren't the only manufacturer to offer small sized 4-cylinder Diesel's here in North America...

Think about this. I was an absolute VW fanatic. At one time we could count 11 vw's in our family. Bugs, Jettas and Passats. Today we have NONE.

IDon't let her problem become your problem.
