I use to have a passat before before I owned a civic. It depends on which passat your looking at, I had a 98 1.8T 5speed, with an APR stage 1 chip, neuspeed cat-back exhaust, and a intake and a forge DV. It only had 68K when i bought it, and I really didnt have any problems at all, the only thing was the timing belt, and that was definietly a hard job. but other then that I liked it. Its bult like a rock, it handled great, and with the chip in it, it was just a blast to drive, That stock motor can handle a lot, the chip bumped up the boost to 18 PSI and about 200 HP and 240 TQ and it was just a blast to drive, the motor was fine running like that daily driving, i had it chipped 40k and had no problems at it all, just regular matience.
Ill agree, they are hard to work on, takes alot of patience. The electrical is a mess, luckily I didn't really have to deal with it. It is very true that vw parts are very expensive, but on the other hand its a nicer car. Your comparing a small economical car to a family sedan. so it really depends on what you want. The reason why I sold it was because a friend of mine wanted to buy it and I just wanted something else to tinker with so i bought a bone stock civic!
What type of civic you looking at?
What about the passat? if the vw is auto id say screw it, they break easy!
