Engine Overheated - Honda Civic Vtec 1997

Can any1 please advise ? Serviced my radiator in December 2009, replaced water pump & timing belt on 31.12.09. But while driving home yesterday, the temperature gauge still fluctuate - near to H (high). And there was some lost of water in radiator. Mechanic already checked there were no hose leakage, no sign of water inside engine. Thanks !

Don't let the engine temp rise above the halfway mark on the dash gauge. Otherwise, the engine could be destroyed.


One possibility is that the cooling system was not properly bled after the work. Is there white smoke in the exhaust?

The bleed procedure may take 20-30 minutes:

1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.

2) Push the dash heater lever/knob to MAX heat.

3) Follow the directions in the diagram below

Water from radiator went to reserve water tank this morning.

My mechanic just remioved thermiostat this afternoon. Will monitor the condition.

You don't want to run without a thermostat. Why did mechanic do this?

I removal the Thermostat on saturday, 2.1.2010. The next day, there was a new leakage from radiator top cover. Even after the replacement of radiator top cover, the temperature is fluctuated HIGH !

Noticed more water getting into the reserve water tank. So I need to top up some water in the radiator.

Please advise what is the problem why temperature is still high ? Thanks !

Already removed & discarded the thermostat.

According to my mechanic & colleague, they said better to remove the thermostat as we are in the tropic where the thermostat is not important compare to seasonal countries.

The thermostat in your engine is important anywhere in the world, regardless of climate.

Did you bleed the cooling system as detailed in my post?

Does the radiator fan run when the engine is hot?

Yes, done the bleed to cooling system with new coolant + radiator fan is functioning well.

That's why I am very puzzled what's wrong with my car ! Thanks.

^This is what you now need to consider. Is there white smoke in the exhaust, oil or bubbles in the coolant, or coolant in the engine oil?

Checked there is no water getting into the engine. So we can't confirm that it is the head gasket gone.

check the plug on bottom of radiator.. ? if you tighten too tight, it will form a small leak.. might evap quickly too..

In the radiator and reservoir, also check for gas bubbles in the coolant.

Not having any of the symptoms I listed does not rule out a blown head gasket. You now may want to do cylinder compression and leak down tests.

And maybe drop another thermostat in, if you're still running without one?
