The speedometer on my daughter's 1999 Honda Civic LX 1.6 L automatic recently started bouncing around, stopped working, then began working and continued to bounce around during a recent highway trip. The odometer also was working intermittently and the check engine light came on. I received an OBD II generic code of P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/performance code. I would like to try changing the sensor in regard to this particular code but I'm not sure if the sensor is on the transmission or the engine itself. Can anyone provide the location and or any graphics of this part and any helpful insight into replacing it? thanks for your help=)

OBDII P0501 code

Thanks for the welcome. After reading up a bit on this subject it would appear there may be a VSS sensor on the transaxle as well, how do i know which one to check and/or replace? Is this code specific to the one on the engine or does this 1999 Civic LX not have one on the tranny? I haven't been able to look yet due to very inclement weather. thanks for any help=)

Well, to answer my own question...there is only one VSS and it is viewable from under the hood as it is located on the top of the transmission which is under the hood as in the illustrations you guys posted for me. I am unable to print the wiring diagrams for some reason so if you could tell me which manual they came out of i would like to try to find them from another source.
Hope this post helps someone else in the future as i had a body shop guy tell me the sensor was inside the transmission and not even visible from under the hood. He should stick to body work and leave the mechanic stuff to the Honda Forum peeps !

The illustrations I gave you were out of the 96-00 Civic Service Manual. There are links to download it in RonJ's signature. I would highly recommend getting the manual and consulting it whenever you want to preform a repair on your Civic.
