Depends on your definition of teacher.. I'm a children's fitness teacher.. and I used to be a children's martial arts instructor.

Not really, lol...I am looking for someone else who may be able to help me with some ideas, but I have a class full of girls and me, so there ideas don't always go with mine...it is hard since there are so few guys in education...I am in Early Childhood btw...

Why don't you elaborate on the situation a little more and tell us what you're looking for. Teacher or not, somebody may have a good idea.

Well, I have come to a lesson plan that has stumped me...it is for a 2nd grade curriculum and will be dealing with operations...

What operations we use is completely up to us...

For those that don't know, operations include adding, multiplying, dividing, subtracting...

Pretty much a short little 10 minute lesson, but it will be expanded when in the classroom I am just not thinking of anything at the moment and have been braindead since last Friday thinking about it although it isn't due for another week...

I don't quite understand what you're asking. But I plan on being a highschool teacher.

so are you looking for like an actual lesson plan to go off of?

Or like activites pertaining to the topics listed?

I need to come up with an activity that has to do with math operations...of course it will need to be hands on since it will be done with 6/7 year olds, so will need to be basic yet creative and not boring like counting beans or manipulatives...I can write the lesson plan, but need ideas on an activity to do...

i've got an idea, might be stupid, but hell.. it's an idea.

Think of it sort of like a red light green light set up. Kids stand at one line, and have to reach another line. You can do it one of two ways
1. Set up math problems... if they get the answer correct, they can take a step forward toward the end line. If they are incorrect, they have to stay in their spot
2. Addition and subtraction problems, 200 - 198... The answer is 2, so they can take 2 steps. If they take more or less than 2 steps, they have to go back to the beginning.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

This might be too challenging for them, but you'd know better than I.

Put them into teams.... and give each team a math problem... Say 2 x 100... The answer is 200. Instead of just saying 200, have the kids lay on the ground and form the number by contorting their body into the numbers... So one kid could try to be the 2, and two other kids could make 0's

like I said, might be too challenging though.

That actually doesn't sound like a bad idea...only thing I can think of coming into play is that there are 24 students, but I am sure we could break them into groups...

Second idea is good as well...maybe instead of forming into numbers, they could use money with quarters, nickles, dimes, and pennies to form the answers therefore using two concept areas and taking care of multiple standards...

I really like that second one...especially since operations as well as money are pretty much the two biggest standards we focus on in this grade...great idea...it could also use all different operations in the questions...

A bit of an expansion on that, it could be set up with three teams and be a "Math Jeopardy" where there are different questions that get harder the farther down they go just like in real jeopardy which would bring in that game part where they are engaged in the learning and provides the "hook", which usually in lessons is a book, song, finger song, dance...

Does that make sense...

Sure does. I was always a big fan of playing jeopardy back in school, but I didn't know you'd be able to use it with second graders. But if you can do it, all the better.

Oh yea...not sure if you have seen them though, but they have interactive smartboards where you can actually make a game, and they come up to the screen with a "pen" that is linked to it where they can pick the categories they would want...last year we had a penpal in China we wrote to every week and did it right through the board...the kids would sit there and talk to each other...very cool technology in the classroom...

Sweet. Sounds like fun. Our system definitely wasn't that advanced back when I was in school. lol.

You'll have to let us know how your lesson turns out.
