A lot of this all depends on your budget. Start by lowering it, if you have a big budget, go with some Koni/GC coilovers. Just throw some rims on it and get a lip on it, don't rice it out. Keep it relatively clean.

Engine wise, your already ahead of the game since it's a 5 speed and your grandma drove it. If your engine savy, you could do a mini-me swap, which is where you put a vtec head on your non-vtec block. Otherwise, you can start by doing an intake, header, and exhaust.

Hope this helps man, congrats on the first car.

If you don't know what you're doing leave it stock for now, try to do some research and find out what you really want to do(if anything that is..).

Well you could lower it. Function Form makes really good and afortable coilovers (about $600 for type 1s), they have almost 100% positive feedback and are pretty comfortable. Thicker sway bars will really improve your handling too...

What's the point of buying a car with low miles if you're just gonna swap the motor out anyways. I say keep the D-series and enjoy your 35+mpg!

well, just build it how you would any other car. i mean, you say you're good with cars and a civic is just another car. and if you're not going to touch the engine till it blows, just do what you think looks right on the outside, like rims, body kit/ lip kit, suspension, brakes, whatever. if you listen to everyone about what to get for your car but tell them you're not going to touch the engine, you're gonna end up with coilover sleeves and random shocks with the car slammed to the floor, gsr blades (or other Stock Honda Rims), and a bike rack or some other type of roof rack (everyone knows it's a trend and we're all too lazy and fat to ride a bike... or go snowboarding/skiing).

either way, whatever you do, do not half ass the suspension. go for controllability, not looks when you lower the car and get a good set of FULL COILOVERS, not sleeves with mix and match shocks, cuz suspension isn't just for looks and performance, it's also a safety issue. so yeah, just build it how you want to build it, and be safe. :D
