HELP! speedometer not working

Hi,

I recently bought a 94 civic LX sedan and just noticed that the speedometer does not work. one thing that I also observed, when I turn the thermostat on my AC to the lowest, speedometer sometimes will reach to 80 to 120 KPH then will go back to zero even the car is not running. Is this a known issue for this particular model?
Please share your thoughts if anyone encounters this issue before.

thanks in advance
Dave

It is definitely a wiring issue. Sounds like you have a short, so break out your OHM meter and get to work. Also find yourself a good wiring diagram to make life easy.

Might be your VSS. (Vehicle Speed Sensor) my civic used to do the same thing until i replaced the VSS and everything started working again

I have the same problem with the odometer not working. This isn't an issue unless your trying to sell the car or keeping track of miles for maintenance.
Does anyone know where the speed sensor is located? Is it connected to the trans somewhere?

I'd say those are two pretty important things...

I hope this helps you guys out. This is from my 1995 Honda Civic Si (EH3) D16Z6. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is mounted on the Transmission Housing. If you look between the intake and the Distributor, you should be able to see it under a vast array of wire looms and hoses.

This is what it looks like.

Oh yeah, if you're not throwing a CEL (Code 17: Vehicle Speed Sensor), try checking the wiring from the PCM/ECU to the Speedometer. If I remember correctly, the wires run behind the dash from the PCM/ECU (whatever you want to call it) to the Speedo.

it's Manual trans. I've checked on the wires just near the intake manifold but all those wires inside the hose looks intack. I am not sure if I need to take it out to take a closer look but definitely this weekend. thanks for the help guys you rock!
