I like 3rd person for games like GTA but for driving I do much better with a front end camera.

I want to do this to an old car, maybe setup some other cameras on it, a bigger screen, maybe even a game controller?

I don't think I could do most driving games without bumper or hood cam. Cockpit cam is not as realistic as driving because you don't have the free reign of head movement like you would in a normal car. 3rd person driving though? Noooooo way.

Oddly enough......I used 3rd person for all of the racing, and used cockpit cam for drifting Its weird, I know. But 3rd person helps me see the whole car and where its headed in regular racing. But in drifting, cockpit gives me more of a feel for how the car is sliding, helps me control it better.
