Um...

You, being in a Criminal Justice class should know this. It is legal for a police officer to detain someone for not giving identification.
Nevada has a “stop-and-identify” law that allows a peace officer to detain any person he encounters “under circumstances which reasonably indicate that the person has committed, is committing or is about to commit a crime”;

you can't just mention PART of the law.. ;)

I didn't read Nevadas law. There are also 10,000 different laws. I'm sure the officer could've found something they did wrong.
I watched these two videos last night and they are highly suggested as reading. One is a Lawyer and the other is a Officer.

i have seen several excerpts from both of those videos and dozens like them..

here is the issue i have.. i like cops for the most part.. no real issue with them.. but i do NOT like my rights violated.. so im pretty stern when it comes to cooperating beyond what is necessary especially if the cop is being a d**k.. it is GOOD to use your rights because when people become complacent and just allow intrusive government it sets the precedent for that s**t to grow out of control.. i have at least one point in my life had a LEO ask to search my car and i denied the search for no other reason than i did not feel like being inconvenienced, and ALL it was a very simple conversation.. "no i do not consent to you searching my vehicle.." "well if you haven't done anything wrong why don't you want me to search the car" and again in a very calm clear voice "i have not done anything to warrant you searching my vehicle, am i free to go now?" the situation arose because i was young it was late and the cop was bored.. it was painfully obvious that he was just looking for something to do.. hoping to find something.. now i DO provide my documents when asked.. i am NOT that ballsy..

I've only had my car searched once. I allowed it, BUT I told him, under one condition, IF he searched my car, he had to put everything bad the way it was (My car was packed to the brim, since I was moving), he agree'd only pulled my tool chest out, searched it and put it back. I got a ticket for expired tags, and went on my marry way. It was a K9 unit, so I knew no matter what, he could say the dog made the action that showed there was drugs (There was none, but I've heard of this done) so I knew no matter what I was going to be searched. Did I feel violated? No. I had nothing to hide, so I had no issue as long he respected my stuff and put it back to the way it was before he searched.

you have no issue with a GROSS intrusion onto your personal space because it has yet to be inconvenient to you or caused a problem..

now imagine you are working towards your 2pm deadline delivering 5 brand new computers you have just built to a local business that is opening tomorrow.. and some cop sees it as suspicious that you are carrying all these expensive computers.. and wants to search.. you have done NOTHING wrong... are you really going to humor that a*****e and allow yourself to be late just because you have done nothing wrong?

time is money.. and being stopped and bothered in a totally random manor would bother me a great deal.. and i would protest the search a million times over.. NOT to break the cops balls.. but to preserve my rights asserting that we do not (yet at least) live in a police state.. where we are subject to unreasonable detention and or searching..

I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would rather him do that, and say, I got robbed and stole all the electronics in my house, and stop that car on the same premise.

When I'm delivering computers, I bring all my paper work with me, invoices, estimates, ect. that also include customers names (businesses name if it's being sold to a business), address and phone number. The name for my business is on the invoices along with my name (exactly as it's written on my drivers license and SSC) so there's no mixing and matching.

Would I have a problem if he kept pushing the issue? Of course, but if it was just a simple, "Why are there 5 computers and monitors in the back of your vehicle?)" I'd tell him, and provide the papers to show it, and he let me go, I'd be fine with it, I know he's doing his job, and at least trying to catch people with stolen items. If he wanted me to pull the computers out, or have a K9 search my vehicle, no, I'd have a problem with it.

RIGHT that is the point..

"where did you get all those computers"
"they are mine i own a business and am delivering them"
"oh ok"

yeah i have NO issue with that as well..

the PROBLEM starts when he doesnt believe you and wants to hold you up an unreasonable amount of time.. dicking around.. making phone calls.. this and that.. when there is no EVIDENCE to suggest wrong doing.. ;)

I take examples as I would handle them if it happened, I try to put myself in the situation. I don't use an example, as that, as example. You may use it to show a bigger point, but I use it to show my way of handling the situation.

It's not OK for the government to randomly search you without a warrant, or without your consent. Just like when an officer comes to my house I greet them outside with the door closed behind me, not with my door wide open.

I don't consider police harassing me when they ask to search my car, because I can decline at anytime. I would consider it harassment if they kept asking, or threatened to get a K9 or Search Warrant, even then I'd still decline, THEN make them look like idiot when they don't find anything.

If he wants to d**k around, I'll politely tell him that if he wishes to call my customer or anyone else, and all that, I'll simply bill the department my hourly rate (38 dollar an hour) for my time.
