Code 86/P0116 and engine revving

Okay so when I turn my car on it putters at first, then revs up to about 3500rpm and gets stuck there???? This happens at random. The only way to get it to stop os to pull the fuse and reset the ecu. Now I can't figure out what's goin on because it's not throwing up any CEL codes. Any clue as to what's happening or an alternative way to trouble shoot this problem?

When the engine is revving, put your hand over the top of the throttle body to see if you can kill the engine. If not, you have a massive intake air or vacuum leak.

Also check whether the throttle cable is adjusted too tightly.

Ronj, first I wanna thank you. You saved me alot of money helpin me trouble shoot problems with my civic, so thanks again. Okay so I tested the intake like you said and it killed it right away. So I think the vac pressure is fine, it actually hurt alittle bit thought it was gonna suck my hand in. My CEL did come on and I pulled the codes. I'm pretty sure it's throwin up code #6 and#8. Or it might be #86. Any ideas??

First clear the ECU, and run the engine to see whether either code repeats. Don't troubleshoot any codes that do not repeat. Did the 8 (80) or 6 come first? 80 is eight long blinks, whereas 8 is eight short blinks. It's important to be confident that you know the correct code(s).

This is your biggest concern. The black sludge is a sign that the head gasket may be blown. This could potentially be related to code 6 or 86, but first verify those codes. Post a video of the blinking CEL if you are not sure how to read it.

Okay I reset the ECU. Drove to work this morning stopped to get coffee and, when I started my car back up it happened again. It always happens at the gas station. So I repulled the codes and, you were right. It's code #80 and code#6. So..... What's the next step? Replace all gaskets?

You have CEL code 86 (P0116). Start by replacing the thermostat and thoroughly bleeding the cooling system (below). The black sludge, however, suggests that the underlying cause of your problem may be a blown head gasket.

-----------------------------------

This procedure may take 20-30 minutes:

1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.

2) Push the dash heater lever/knob to MAX heat.

3) Follow the directions in the diagram below

Okay I'll try that. Why is this causing my car to idle at 3k? I won't be able to relace this till later this afternoon. So I will keep you posted.

Idle speed is determined in part by engine temperature. That's why the idle speed is normally high when the engine is cold. If the ECT sensor receives a false signal, such as might occur when air is trapped in the cooling system, the idle speed may be erratic.
