when my car is idleing there is a low scraping/ grinding noise. sounds like metal on metal. kinda loud. goes away once driving. im thinking could be main bearings. but hoping its just something wrong with the a/c pump. or the oil pump. any ideas would be great. thanks.

Open the hood while the engine is idling and try to pinpoint the noise. A cheap engine stethoscope cost me $4 from Harbor freight Tools, and it works wonders to locate the source of engine noises.

ive got one lying around somewhere. i opened the hood and got it narrowed down to the lower drivers side i think. its always had an oil leak and ive just kept putting oil in it whenever it got low. will be trying to find out what the problem is tomorrow.

keep us updated. i always like seeing a problem/someone finding a solution for my own future reference.

Was the noise from the compressor or idler pulley? If you need the A/C, you could probably fix the problem by replacing the idler pulley or compressor pulley where the bearing is located.

ide prefer to roll with the windows down. for as often as i use it its not worth fixing. pulling the whole a/c system out later this week and see if i might be able to trade it for some other parts at the pick and pull around here.
