I have the poorman type r turbo setup with 260whp, looking to upgrade to 3" exhaust and get maybe 280 whp. Is it necessary to upgrade to arp head studs for that amount of horsepower, and can i do so without removing the head?

lol you should be fine with stock head bolts if your stayin under 300whp... i guess you'll find out if you need them when you blow a head gasket....:P

and yes you have to remove the head....

stock head studs should be fine, i ran mine over 300hp no problems, but if u want the peace of mind, just go ahead and replace them, its cheap insurance.

Ummm I would absolutely upgrade the headstuds if doing any sort of forced induction.

The stock ones are so bad, plus the ARP headstuds are what, like $100?

I don't really care about the 100 dollars its the labor to remove the head to replace the studs. I heard someone say that you can replace them without removing the head as long as you remove one stud at a time

never heard of that, do it right bro, just remove them all, and replace the gasket and bolt and torque down in the right sequence, stock head studs are not all that bad. But like i said, its cheap insurance and ease of mind. There are alot of ppl that run stock studs, but every motor is different, something that may work for someone, may not work for someone else. Im not saying go ahead and boost 400hp or something stock ones LOL

Good luck!

in my opinion, just buy them, keep them uninstalled in the package until your gasket blows. it will likely eventually blow, its just a matter of when. if/when it blows replace both

lol dude this can seriously warp your head and blow your head gasket regardless of the ARP's. Just do it right the first time, compression is something you really dont wanna f**k with.

Its easy as f**k to do it on a SOHC, mine were done in probably 3 hours with basic hand tools and a 1/2" torque wrench.
Remove Timing belt
disconnect everything from head including all hoses and wires
remove 14mm bolts in order
Install a new HG and torque them down to specs.

For DOHC you have to remove the cams :/

I did it for cheap insurance since I got them for $75 new lol.
