Oil flow into the Gulf stopped, for now

We are not out of the woods yet, but today some progress was made to stop oil flowing into the ocean off the coast of Louisiana.

Oil Flow Is Stemmed, but Could Resume, Official Says

HOUSTON — By injecting solid objects overnight as well as heavy drilling fluid into the stricken well leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, engineers appeared to have stemmed the flow of oil, Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard, the leader of the government effort, said on Friday morning. But he stressed that the next 12 to 18 hours would be “very critical” in permanently stanching what is already the worst oil spill in United States history.
---
“They’ve been able to push the hydrocarbons and the oil down with the mud,” he said, referring to the heavy drilling fluid. “The real challenge is to put enough mud into the well to keep the pressure where they can put a cement plug over the top.”
---
He said that overnight, workers pumped what is known as “junk shot,” a mix of more substantial materials, like golf balls and shredded tires, into the well, and he said they would follow with more mud later Friday. The junk shot serves as a “bridge,” he said, for the mud injections, to strengthen their ability to counteract the leaking oil.
---
While he was optimistic, Mr. Hayward gave the effort a 60 percent to 70 percent chance of success because it had never been tried in water this deep. On CNN Friday, Mr. Hayward said it would be at least 48 hours before the success of the effort could be fully assessed, but he acknowledged that much damage had already been done.
---
“This is clearly an environmental catastrophe,” he said. “There is no two ways about it.” The effort to plug the well has proceeded in fits and starts. BP officials, who along with government officials created the impression early Thursday that the strategy was working, disclosed later that they had stopped pumping on Wednesday night when engineers saw that too much of the drilling fluid was escaping along with the oil. At a news conference in Washington on Thursday, the president said he was angry and frustrated about the catastrophe, and he shouldered much of the responsibility for the continuing crisis.
---
In the top kill maneuver, a 30,000-horsepower engine aboard a ship injected heavy drill liquids through two narrow flow lines into the stack of pipes and other equipment above the well to push the escaping oil and gas back down below the sea floor.

As hour after hour passed after the top kill began early Wednesday afternoon, technicians along with millions of television and Internet viewers watched live video images showing that the dark oil escaping into the gulf waters was giving way to a mud-colored plume.

That seemed to be an indication that the heavy liquids known as “drilling mud” were filling the chambers of the blowout preventer, replacing the escaping oil.

They have the ships to suck up the oil from the water..

Why don't they use them? :what:

not sure who to be MORE annoyed with, but the fact that this took like a MONTH to even START to deal with is f**king ridiculous.. i saw Obama yesterday babbling about how they were right on top of it.. i would have given him MORE credit if he was just honest and said something like we should have been MORE on top of it.. we have nuclear missiles.. sent people to the moon.. and so on.. it taking a MONTH to be able to say "ok we think we stopped it" is TOTALLY unacceptable.. s**t like this is WHY people DON'T want offshore drilling.. the companies are making enough f**king money.. they need to have WAY better safety procedures in place..

You're annoyed with BP for taking this long to find the solution?

your annoyed with BP for taking this long to find the solution? I know i am.
that and the ultra relaxed laws that allowed this to occur.. offshore drilling should be something that has so much redundancy built into the safety measures that situations like this simply can NOT occur..

i would like to blame illegals but i have yet to come up with some insane right wing conservative theory that would allow the blaming of them.. hopefully i will figure SOMETHING out.. :P;)

TOTALLY possible.. lol

but seriously.. how is it that you have to get your car inspected constantly.. and you fail for having tread that is a FRACTION of an inch too low.. or brakes that don't stop the car in a short enough distance.. or a bad cat that MIGHT cause some more pollution.. but these f**king drilling sites can operate with obviously NO serious back up plan.. when a car brakes yeah it sucks.. yeah its dangerous yeah it causes accidents.. but this f**king thing has been SPEWING oil for over a MONTH.. there is SERIOUSLY something wrong there...

Maybe one of the workers that was working the day this all took place was an illegal

I heard we plugged the hole with illegals.

dont worry they used golf balls to plug the hole, that is sure gonna end up in the belly of some endangered albatross for sure...

my problem is these things ARE safe, i mean look at the track record, how many rigs have caused massive spills? there needs to be more check and gate valves in these drilling sites. when the exxon valdeese ripped open people were saying the same thing "oh stop letting tanker ships transport the oil, it is these kind of things that lead to better checks and safety precautions.

It's like nuclear power plants, it only takes a few accidents to do a lot of damage and to raise public concern.

The most recent update on the NY Times suggests that things actually may not be going very well and that the pumping operation has again been suspended. Not good.

just because something is relatively safe and or rarely fails doesnt make it ok.. i certainly dont want to STOP offshore drilling.. in fact the opposite i think that its pretty necessary.. but f**k.. a month + later and we are STILL just DUMPING tons of oil into the ocean per hour... dumping TONS of oil into the ocean is obviously not a good thing.. so i think that these multi-trillion dollar companies making bank off of the drilling need to step up and provide an environment where there is next to NO possibility for an "accident", AND if there IS one some good TIMELY plan to deal with it..

There was a failure 5 Hours before the explosion happened if I'm correct. Meaning this could of been avoided
