Also, consider doing:
FIRST - any check engine lights? Have them read for free at an auto parts store and address those before getting too far into anything else here.
- check tires & tire pressure
- check brakes, replace if worn
- check for oil and coolant leaks inside your engine bay and on the engine/transmission
- fuel filter
- flush brake fluid
- flush clutch fluid (if equipped)
- flush coolant, check thermostat and replace if old
- PVC valve, if old
- change transmission fluid
- check battery; have it tested at an auto parts store. (And don't replace it just because they agressively recommend it. Change it when you can't drive out of their parking lot.)
- replace ting belt and water pump if old ( note: this is not considered a beginer's job if you're considering the DIY-route)
