Budget cuts are forcing police around the country to stop responding to fraud, burglary and theft calls as officers focus limited resources on violent crime.

Cutbacks in such places as Oakland, Tulsa and Norton, Mass. have forced police to tell residents to file their own reports — online or in writing — for break-ins and other lesser crimes.

"If you come home to find your house burglarized and you call, we're not coming," said Oakland Police spokeswoman Holly Joshi. The city laid off 80 officers from its force of 687 last month and the department can't respond to burglary, vandalism, and identity theft. "It's amazing. It's a big change for us."

Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest police union, said cutbacks are preventing many police agencies from responding to property crimes.

"The chiefs are putting the best face on this they can," Pasco said. "But think of this: that next property crime could involve a junkie who killed someone the night before."

In Tulsa, which lost 110 officers to layoffs and retirements, the 739-officer department isn't sending cops to the scene of larceny, fraud and car theft.

Tulsa police spokesman Jason Willingham says some residents have said they won't bother to report those crimes any more. "They think nothing is going to be done, so why mess with it," he said.

In the Boston suburb of Norton, police told residents there may be delays or no response at all to some calls, including vandalism. The department posted the new policy on its website.

"We wanted to let people know about this," Norton Police Chief Brian Clark said. "We didn't want people to be surprised."

Bernard Melekian, director of the Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, said the actions reflect are a reflection of the hard economic times across the country.

Kinda sucks. I see this at work now, how people wont come out to an accident in some states, wont come for the things listed above etc. It really slows everything down. Especially when you are trying to see if there is any info on a police report for possible suspects or witnesses in a claim, and you have to wait 30-45 days.

10 years from now (if nothing changes),, they will stop responding to the "not so important" violent crimes. :???:

It sucks, but there isnt much that can be done. I personally think its bullshit that their funding got cut anyway, yea lets f**king cut money from police and firefighters. f**king brilliant. I wish I had the chance for a crack shot at the retard who came up with that idea. Trenton is laying off 100+ police officers, Trenton, one of the worst cities in Jersey.

QFT

you would be suprised at the amount of B.S jobs there are out there that get paid a GRIP. But the people risking thier lives on a daily, or doing a great good for the community/state are getting these cutback or are paid crap all together.

this was bound to happen for some time..

we are a nation of little substance.. we outsource everything.. grossly inflate the prices of everything.. and have just reached a point where there is no money left.. you live in NJ.. there are HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS making $100k+ and people wonder why there is no money..

allow just anyone to come in.. tie up resources.. suck up the money.. ship it back to their poor nations..

allow manufactures to build production facilities across the boarders to save on labor..

allow ridiculous unions to argue that some idiot should make $35 an hour to screw bolts on at a construction site.. or argue some teacher should make $90k a year to teach some kid art 9 months a year..

go figure.. America has destroyed its middle class.. the working class.. there are few left.. the greed of our nation has created an ENORMOUS rift between the wealthy and the rest of us..so there is NOTHING left to happen except one thing.. and that is failure.. and that failure is coming.. it could be peaceful but will likely not be.. as jobs continue to fall off.. and more people find themselves unemployed people will resort to crime. .. and the rates will increase.. I have felt prepared for this situation for some time, so it honestly doesnt concern me much.. sadly all that needs to happen is a little house cleaning.. and some modest pay cuts across the board..

you need to save "$100k" (just for example)

you can do that two ways..
1) have 20 people take a $5k a year pay cut
2) fire 2 people making $50k a year

obviously the first is FAR more appealing.. because firing them just puts them at the unemployment office.. and puts one more family on the government check.. YOUR MONEY.. so really wise up America.. stop being so full of yourselves.. take that pay cut... work with the system.. keep your co-workers employed.. in the end it is FAR cheaper that way..

I'm with OC here, though I personally could never afford a $5k pay cut. I barely get by on the $20k I make a year, not to mention having to pay for school in the process. I feel like I have friends whose parents make ridiculous sums of money who should get a $5k pay cut, but me, I couldn't afford the price of living where I am at.

if you are making $20k a year OBVIOUSLY no one would expect you to take a %25 pay cut.. but there are teachers in NJ who were asked to take a pay freeze which is not even a cut.. and the teachers union launched world war three..

the problem again at the core is entitlement.. people think they DESERVE something JUST because they are teachers.. or US citizens.. you just want to say hey a*****e we are in a recession.. you dont get by totally free.. suck it up a little..

I can understand that for sure. I actually work at a high school, and I make about $5k less a year than the most tenured teacher there (as a paraeducator). I couldn't imagine ever making $100k to teach, unless I was like a Ph.D teaching at a renowned university. People around here don't get into teaching for the money, they get into it to help the future generations.

Same here. I dont know where you live Ant, but teachers in my area get into it because they love to teach.

As for your first post, I agree....totally. I have also thought that things were going to get a lot worse before they get better. I may not have the equipment to be TOTALLY prepared for it, but Im definitely mentally prepared for it.
