whining noise in first gear

hello cc members,

I currently drive a 98 civic DX and there has been something bugging me when driving.
When I'm driving in 1st gear at pretty low speeds (about 5/10mph .5-2k rpm) in the parking lot at work, I notice a whining sound. Its a sound that sounds similar to the sound that you hear when in reverse.
I have searched other forums but I couldn't find the answer. A lot of people seem to point out this problem, so it's starting to make me think that it's normal. I just got the car a year ago as the second owner and it has always been doing this. But the sound only comes out when I go at a constant speed at low rpms in 1st gear.

The engine is stock (d16y7)
My car has 92,xxx miles and I changed the clutch at about 90k. My MTF was changed at the same time and filled all the way.

any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

yeah, it kind of does. I'm going to have my co-worker drive it tomorrow and see what he says.
I sure hope its not a vacuum leak lol
thanks for your input though. My mind is more at ease.

Make sure your serpentine belt is properly tightened.

A little tiny bit of whine is normal. And obviously it gets a little louder as the RPM gets higher. If it's really loud and sounds out of the ordinary, then you probably have a problem.

thanks for the info! this really made me feel relieved.
The only thing is, the whine goes away after I get to about 2k rpm. So, i'm hoping that its all normal.

Have them belts re-checked then. Bring it back to whoever changed em all. maybe a mistake was made. Get a 2nd mechanic's opinion or something.

Yeah it sounds normal. My car has been doing it for a long time now. It's a normal noise from civics. My grandpa went out to Honda and asked for me.. Just don't let it get too loud like it's been mentioned.

If it bothers you like me sometimes, just go into 2nd gear.
Glad I could help.
