5.0 has an iron block and ruins the excellent weight ratio of the miata. The LSX is all aluminum and nearly the same weight as the rotary. If you want a quick japanese car on the cheap side, do a 5.0L V8 in a miata.
You're forgetting that you can then part out the rest of the donor car and make money BACK.The cheapest way to get a complete LS1 swap is to get a totaled '98-'02 Camaro/Firebird. Even then, you are talking about $2500 minimum for one with at least 100k miles. The '98 and some '99 models had a higher tendency to leak oil, so he would want at least a year 2000 which will up the price...and on top of that they are hard to come by. So youre looking at ~$3500 for a decently reliable complete swap which will be hard to find. Then he has to most likely pay to get towed to his house if he doesnt have a trailer. Then he has to factor in the cost of a plug and play installation kit, which I cant find for less than $1500 for just the mounting hardware....not including electrical. And on top of that he needs a FD shell in good condition. If someone has the money....yea it would be worth it to commit blasphemy. But for someone who just got out of the Honda game, I have to assume that this budget is over his head.
yes i agree with you on the cost, and the fact that he is a clubcivic member really supports the claim that he will never make this happenHe is looking at ~$3k for the drivetrain after he parts out the donor car, could fluctuate dependent upon different circumstances. I was just saying that is relatively expensive for a used engine considering the budget normal honda owners live on. I am an avid LS1 fan. I would LOVE to have an LS1 car someday. But they are not cheap engines. Power to cost ratio is good, but that doesnt make it cheap.
And still no torque while getting worse gas mileage. Good plan.20B dude... 300 hp twin turbo out of the box right there, then do peripheral port and switch to a single turbo and upgrade the turbine. You're looking at a easy ~400 hp.
Stock LS1 makes 350 at the crank, that's just a starting point. With the headers and intake that are necessary for the swap it will get a few more. That's with readily available factory parts!20B dude... 300 hp twin turbo out of the box right there, then do peripheral port and switch to a single turbo and upgrade the turbine. I hope you didnt take any of my comments as putting the LS1 down. I freakin LOVE the LS series engines from Chevrolet, and would love to have an LS based vehicle one day. Just saying that the drivetrain is popular, so its pretty expensive. Yes it is worth the cost.....if you can afford it.yes i agree with you on the cost, and the fact that he is a clubcivic member really supports the claim that he will never make this happen
This depends. LS1 from the Camaro/Firebird make 325 at the crank, the ones in the Corvette make 350. This comment is not meant to s**t on you......but it seems you have more research to do. I have not been looking into LS1's for over a year and a half, and even then I had limited knowledge. Do some more homework before "committing" to something.....it will help you out a lot in the long run. How exactly do you plan to get the drivetrain? Totaled car? Online dealer? Junk yard?Stock LS1 makes 350 at the crank
325 and 350 is not a huge difference. I was just trying to make a point about rotarys. LS1's with T56 tranny's, all excessories and puter can be bought for 4-5k with low miles. Trust me, I have been doing my homework. This depends. LS1 from the Camaro/Firebird make 325 at the crank, the ones in the Corvette make 350. Like I said, I was not trying to insult you. And I hope you didnt take offense. If you have already done your homework, great. One of the major differences between the two is the tune, they tuned it down for the Camaro/Firebird. 350 at the crank can be had EASILY with headers and exhaust.325 and 350 is not a huge difference. FAR slower than an RX7 with an LS1 would be.I would of stuck with the Civic and just got a b18 or b20 block and rebuild the head... DONE
