New to site, quick question on pricing for ek coupe

Hi everybody, I'm new to the site. Currently I have a 2003 Ranger I'm thinking of trading down to a 2000 Civic EX coupe at a dealership within a few hours drive.

The Civic has just under 100k miles but has not had the timing belt or water pump replaced yet. I'll also have to get a block heater installed due to where I live. Their asking price is $6000 (seems very high to me), but I offered $4500 knowing that I'm going to land up throwing almost $1500 at a water pump, timing belt, block heater, and snow tires on steelies. Would $4500 be a fair price to pay for this car? What's the most I should pay? What have other members on the forum paid for similar cars at dealerships?

I'm not set on the EK Civic, but they are nice small cars. It's on the top of my short list in front of 2005-2007 Ford Focus and 2004-2005 Dodge Neon SXT.

They are overcharging horribly. I got my 2003 EX with the same mileage for $6k. Drop them much lower on the price, or walk out. You are always better off dealing with private party when buying a used car. You will get much better prices, and actually have a slight chance that someone WON'T be trying to F you in the A.

Yeah, dude. I've been looking for the exact same car. VJF is right. $6,000 is ridiculous. And dealerships do try and screw you over. But, good luck in searching. I'm doing the same

In my experience with dealerships it seems that you can tell how good of a deal you are getting by how rude they are to you. The nicer they are, the more likely it is that you are over-paying. If anybody ever goes to the Subaru dealership in La Crosse, WI the only nice person you will meet there is the person that does the paperwork. Sales manager was nearly as rude as the salesman.

It takes care of the question of "how will I pay my Ranger loan and Civic loan at the same time until I find a buyer for my Ranger?" Most private parties are dishonest when they are trying to sell something, so the only real difference is price.

So you don't think I could get them down to $4500? That seems to be the going rate...

I'll probably go through my bank or credit union. Credit is pretty easy for me to get, and since I'd only be doing a 2 year loan interest wouldn't be too bad. Hell, if I really wanted to I could put it on my credit card.

True. I'm just saying that most places will settle for less than what they're asking for if you have cash in hand. Just my two cents. But, good luck again man.

Interesting, I had always thought that most dealerships would rathe finance because there is more money to be earned that way. I thought it was just junkies that prefer cash in hand. Either way I think what's important is a legitimate intent to buy.

Nah from some lady who's husband died and just left it parked in the garage for like 10 years
