Hey everyone im new to this whole fourm thing, dontknow if this is the right spot to post this... but i just wanted to know the specs for a d16a motor? I recently bought an 1998 honda civic SI . I just wanted to know if the d16a is the original motor for this car or was it swapped? the car didnt have the si badge at the back and the valve cover didnt say vtec but i do see the vtec solenoid so it is vtec but i think the ownership said it was an SI...i just wanted to know if if this car was really an si?? and im from canada.lol..also what are your thoughts about a d16a motor and its potential..thanks.
i got people telling me its equivalent to the d16z6 and d16y8..which one is it? also im guessing this isnt the original motor for the car then right so would anyone happen to know what year/model this motor came from?
Your car's original engine would be a D16Y8, which is also found in the US '96-'00 Civic EX coupe and sedan.
The D16A is an engine from a Japanese market car, possibly another Civic. Japanese engines usually do not have a digit at the end of their engine code though, so often different engines might have the same code. For example, there is an engine in JDM Integras that is equivalent to our GSR engine and another one that is in the higher powered Integra Type R. They both say B18C on them though, while the US GSR reads B18C1 and the US ITR reads B18C5.
D16As are NOT the same as all those codes posted earlier from Wikipedia.
So D16A is stamped on several different engines of different years. It could be VTEC or non-VTEC or even VTEC-E (though this is less likely).
What we do know from the code is that it's a SOHC JDM engine. I believe this engine would come from an OBD1 or OBD2 car. It is likely more like a D16Z6, D16Y7 or D16Y8 than any of the engines in the Wikipedia post.
Some cars that came with engines stamped D16A (I will mark cars I know or believe have VTEC):
1991-1995 Civic Coupe STD (EJ1) (VTEC)
1995-1998 CR-X del Sol VGi (EJ4) (VTEC)
1996-2001 Civic Coupe STD (EJ7) (VTEC)
1995-2000 Civic Ferio RTi (EK5) (4WD) (VTEC)

2001-???? HR-V JS (GH1)
1996-2003 HR-V J4 (GH2)
1996-2003 HR-V JS4 (GH2) (VTEC)

1997-1999 Domani 16G sedan (MB4)
1997-1999 Domani 16X sedan (MB4) (VTEC)
1998-???? Domani 16LEV sedan (MB4)
1997-1999 Domani 16G 4WD sedan (MB5) (VTEC)
1997-2000 Isuzu Gemini 1600 C/C (MJ5)
1997-2000 Isuzu Gemini 1600 C/C 4WD (MJ6)
To get a better idea of what your D16A is equivalent to, at least in US terms, you need to find the year stamp in the circle directly under where the valve cover mates with the head and check to see if the engine has a VTEC solenoid. That should start you on figuring it out at least.
I would greatly recommend you post this in the '92-'00 Civic section on Honda-Tech.com as well.
