For those who have been turbod, you guys think you could post your build, power, how long it lasted and why it failed? Im about to turbo my fully built d16y8 and for the past year, i have never seen any forum with a thread showing the true life span of some builds...

ls/vtec on 7.25psi garrett t3/t4. the motor was rebuilt from the bottom up with stock internals except for some ARP hardware. tuned on apexi powerfc. has 60k miles and is over 3 years old and still going strong, but the turbo smokes a bit during WOT

From mid 2008 til january 2010 I ran a d16y8 all stock with an automatic transmission and no tune daily. I was using an '86 T-bird turbo (basically running a hmt). Spun a bearing on january 2010 cuz of a failed oil pump.

Now I'm running the same setup but with a manual trans, vitara kit with custom I beam rods, arp hardware, z6 crankshaft, ported oil pump, and still no tune. The only problems is the turbo gasket keeps tearing apart and I can't floor it because the car would hesitate and sputter. I'm sure if I tune this it would run like a champ.

So your telling me you ran a turbod setup without a tune for more than a year without detonation??? How much psi and hp?

the wastegate had a 6 lb spring according to the person i bought it from, but its a deltagate mark 2 by turbonetics, and i never knew what kind of horsepower my car had because i never dynoed it. So.. yea no detonation. I'm just lucky like that:thumbs up

d16y8:
75mm YCP vitara pistons
eagle h beam rods
arp head studs
crower turbo cam
crower titanium retainers
crower valve springs

Tuned on Hondata s300, Lasted 2.5 years on 20ish psi with a t3/t04e .48 .60a/r turbo. Eventually had to rebuild it because the wrist pin retaining clips broke and allowed the wristpin to walk out and hit cylinder wall.

that f**king sucks. nothing like destroying a several thousand dollar motor build from a $5 part breaking

Now how would the wrist pin and clips just break like that? Bad install?

eh, s**t happens. I was pretty pissed at the time though

Its not the wrist pin that breaks, it was able to walk out and start rubbing on the cylinder wall. Not quite sure why it happened, I've heard of 2 or 3 other cases where it happened. I guess its just luck of the draw.

JDM B18B
stock block, stock head
Garrett T3/T4 .60 trim
Injector Dymanics 725cc injectors
Running @10psi, since September. Running perfect so far minus a bad clutch (slipping). So I guess we'll see how long it lasts *knock on wood*

Picked up a built B18 head (crower double springs, titanium retainers / keepers. Going to get a set of BC turbo cams and adjustable gears, and do a mild build on the bottom end.. and go from there.

Would a bad clutch ever mess with street/dyno tuning results?

Yes, the tuners did their best to tune around it... nothing that will hurt the motor, but probably not getting the most out of it right now. It didn't slip terribly bad then, but now it slips soo bad if I get on it in a low gear that it's like I'm revving in neutral.. I go nowhere. I actually can't go past like.. half throttle in 1st. lol.

Correct me if im wrong, but the clutch disk being worn would be the reason why your clutch would slip right? Or is it the pressure plate? If it was just the clutch disk, it wuda been an easy $80 fix, being that u wud be doing the labor. Also, if u were to change up ur clutch setup, wudnt u have to retune your car all over again?

its not just the disc, but that the pressure plate does not have enough clamping force. If your car is tuned, and you change the clutch, you dont need to re tune. But, most people spin the clutch on the dyno and it stops the tune, so then they have to replace clutch and re tune

When they tuned my car on the dyno, it was intermittently slipping, but they were able to work with it and get decent numbers out of it.

NOW it slips like it's job though, lol. It's my fault for getting a cheap clutch... soo this spring I'll get a good clutch and work from there.

I can vouch for that lol. I was even surprised when I saw you and you told me there was no tune.
