As far as the water damage, you could always do a Car Fax on it... But yea keep em low miles... My 03 trailblazer has almost 150k so I will never be able to sell it lol...

That's a s**t ton of miles. My friend had a WRX and from what I remember, he said those motors aren't reliable past 100,000 miles. I could be wrong though.
I have a friend with a bug eye with nearly 270k miles. stock turbo and engine. the transmissions are junk though

Won't show anything if the car was never reported or claimed under insurance.

For example, I had a Nissan Hardbody mini truck that I got into a wreck with. Ended up being over $9k in damage. Never claimed it on insurance so it never showed up on the carfax.

Agreed but if claimed it would show so better to check than not

dont get a wrx. you will always wish it was an sti

that's almost like saying, Don't get an Si. You will always wish it was an R.
except we don't get type R in the States. but Sti yes.

Or don't get a RSX, you'll always wish it was a Type S

OP,

Go with a Honda!

97k is pretty high for a is300. Make sure the 90k service was done WITH paperwork to prove it!

Around here 01-04 is300 typically have less than 75k miles and selling for right around 10k. I've been lurking the market for a great deal =)

Personally, I won't buy anything with 100k+ on it unless I know it's a Honda, and that's simply because I could put a few hundred bucks in and some wrench time and fix pretty much any problem. That being said...buy what you want, don't listen to what people have to say on here. I have owned a random assortment of vehicles and though I'm slightly partial to them, my Honda's have always been way more reliable than any of my others.

Rear main seal on an Xterra? Almost a grand if not more.

Transmission, starter, alternator, battery, cap, plugs, wire, rotor, air cleaner, an oil change, all my fluids, a new VSS, etc.? Maybe like $700 total. Think about your maintenance costs vs. how reliable the car will be.

I kinda like the silver IS300. The price isn't bad. 97k isn't all that bad. People drive their cars. Get what YOU want. I find it amusing though that you are asking for opinions of non Honda cars on this forum=) Good luck.

You're amusing for assuming a site for Civics is lacking in enough knowledge to make a judgement call on any used car.

The '02 WRX that you posted, you should not pay anymore than 5500 for that.

The IS300 that you posted (first one), you should not pay anymore than 5500 for that.

I wouldn't buy a used Subaru that was anything but pristine. Hell mine was pristine and still ended up spinning a bearing with 66k miles on it.

$4500 later I have a new engine.

haha this is kind of true, but when you have a bug eye like me your like a wait they didnt have sti's then (at least in the sates)...anyway...i picked up my wrx wagon for 7500, its an 02 with 100k on the clock from a dealership...if your buying from a private seller...no more than 5500 like stated above i love my wrx its fun gets me from point a to point b just fine, yeah i want it faster but honestly with a few bolt ons like full exhaust (turbo back and catless up pipe) intake and one or two other things with a good tune you can make 250 to the wheels like my friend proved to me today

so what i have learned from all you subie guys is that buying any subi used with "higher" milage is a mistake? i am tempted to get one of the following subies: rs2.5, a wrx bug eye or the peanut eye, sti peanut eye, or maybe a legacy 05 up, all share motors for the most part right? and all those motors share a common trans outside of the sti right? thanks tonee and low not slow(what is your name?)
