So.. my tuner wants $3800 (rough estimate) for purchase of new Eagle Rods, forgot brand of Pistons, bored to 81.5mm, new waterpump. This includes parts, labor, and pulling the motor out of the car and putting back in.
To me that seems like a crapload of $. I've never done anything with the bottom end before, so I don't think I'd want to do it, but I reallly don't want to spend that much.... I'm a poor college kid. lol.

Will he be doing things like piston to wall clearances for you as well? With labor an average of 75$ an hour, 3800.00 is pretty good if he does everything that needs to be done. I just learned this the hard way. I ordered my block one way and it was so out of spec I wiped a piston and cylinder. Ugly and my fault for not checking.:-)
i would say go for it. just for the assurance you wont pop you're motor over something stupid like i did.

What do you think about finding a used block and building that outside the car? Since my car is a DD and it's the only one I have.
I found a block locally on CL, guy only wants $50 for it. I figured if I'm tearing into it anyways it might not be a bad pickup? I have a buddy who does a TON of work on my car who said he'd help with the build, and I could get the block looked at by a shop before dropping her in just to make sure I can limp her down to the tuner for a retune afterwards.
Ideas? lol

Not a bad idea and building an angine out of the car is so much easier. you can take you're time cause its a spare motor and not worry about how you're gonna get places like class. i would take the block to a shop to inspect and if the cylinders are still good, do it to it mang!

$50, no rods, pistons. Mileage unknown, he got the block in a trade. Sent me one crappy cell phone picture, couldn't tell much.

as long as you can get the block/crank/caps and the crank isnt all jacked up then its a good deal. Send the b***h off to GE to be sleeved and build it

I think I'm going to pick up the block for $50. There's a good machine shop around here that will inspect, clean, bore and hone the block to 81.5mm for around $250. I've heard that's kind of expensive, but this shop has had very good reviews on the local board.
Since I don't know much about what I need, what else should I get? Rods, pistons, acl bearings? Only looking for ~300whp soo it doesn't need to be over the edge - I rather be reliable since this is my dd.

rods, pistons, rings, bearings (main and rod), thrust bearings, arp studs, and oem headgasket
plus, you might as well throw in a new oil pump, water pump, rear main seal, timing belt tentioner, etc.

So I say 50.00 Block, the reason I say that is because you NEVER know what shop they used to do the work, they could of honed the block with a home hone kit and say they had it machined... Even with receipts how do you know that shop wasn't worthless and that it was THAT block and not another? 50.00 dollar block and then chose YOUR parts that YOU want...
I agree but OP your boosting right? I have heard that a GSR Oil Pump is better than the LS pump for boost. G-Traction can you confirm/deny?
i say this is a good oportunity for you to learn the inards of youre motor. Imo i would find out if the block is good, get a block guard and then have the block machined accordingly,would you mind doing a slow build? all fresh parts and a bad ass motor when you're done! Could take a wile but it'll be worth it.

I would love to, but money is most definitely an issue. I'm still a poor college kid, lol. I will be co-oping over the summer like previously, so I will be getting some money, but I don't know where I will even be working yet.
I wanted to try to keep the budget to around $2000 if at all possible. But after going through a lot of what I need, I'm not sure if that is possible, lol. I priced out a bunch of stuff and came to around $2600...
Also, anyone know anything about CP Pistons? Their website has their whole piston kit, with rings, pins, and locks... for $280... Their site seems very knowledgeable and has very many good reads on there..
