Leds flash to bass music

So a while back I said I was going to make a circuit that you could use to flash your leds to just the base hits in your music. Well I finally got it all done and its working now, better than I hoped too. Originally I had planed to hook up 3 different frequencies, to 3 different leds, but then I realized that for most music, the mid base and treble frequencies are so flooded with sound that the leds would just be on constantly, it didn't look that spectacular either, I think just the leds hitting on the base is cooler. In addition to figuring that out, I also added a capacitor, now when the base hits, the led will fade off, instead of just going out. This effect is really sweet. Anyways here is a video of it done. Give me a bit for the schematics and such.

*edit, just when you think your out, they pull ya back in. ran into a snag with integrating it into the car, works fine at a certain volume, but then you go above that volume and it stays on constantly, go below it and it doesn't light up, give me a little while to trouble shoot, i know i need to add a variable resistor to it, but im not sure where, sorry, just a bit longer. in the mean time, here is the diaram.

you can ignore the switch if you want, its just in there if you want it, works fine without it.
Yellow-12v positive
Black-negative
Red-positive from music
you can buy a tip 31 transistor online for pretty cheep, just type in tip 31 on ebay or what not.
also, its not shown but you will need a resistor for your leds lol, this one is ok cuz its 4x3v leds, =12v, but you need to add a resistor if your leds are not already primed for 12v.

OMFG, thank you. Ive been trying to figure out how to do this for a while now. I love bass and always wanted my ambient lighting to flash to it.

i like the circuitry s**t you do, but... that's.. just too F&F for me...

dude, you have a great skill working with electronics. some i find to be pretty cool, others arent my taste, but keep up the cool designs man!

lol. these are not my designs, mostly just repurposed circuits i find online. i just tweek them form my own uses. dont give me too much credit.

F&F means?

also: figured out the problem. the resistor i was using to tame down the car was too big, and i had it hooked up wrong, so i will get the correct way to do this latter when i finish it all up. all thats different will be a little potentiometer, bout 10 k, hooked up to the music positive and negative that will vary the power going into the leds, so if you turn up your music, your going to have to adjust the potentiometer, but thats not such a big deal, most people keep there music at a constant level.

I love that fact that if you add lights to your car, you become a F&F fanboy. He likes lights(as do i) and its his right to add them. Some people like 42" wings or huge ass fart cans or spinners. It's their car not yours.

i kinda wanna put some leds in the tahoe. but just white leds . under the dash and such, so when you get in you can see where you are putting your feet

(i has a weird thing about spiders) lmao

Yeah i have some of those in my car, had some kinda cool color changing ones from a kit that i bought. but now i dont use them anymore, im actually thinking of switching to the same set up as the one your talking about, but i would put on a little dimmer circuit so they fade off and stuff. would be kinda cool.

Ah, now i see, tied urban and it said, friends and family...and that just didn't make sens lol.

buuuut DAT MOOVE OFF DA HOOOK!!! lol, i have never seen them, well, i saw a little bit of the Japanese one i think, im a fan of rally racing and such, but idk. so im guessing that F&F would be considered rice ish yes?

well my cars a 98 sooooooooooo.......:D
ROFL.

that's badass...but it sounds like work:(.... cant i just wire the pos and neg wires with the sub wires that run from the amp to sub?

OOh... and i kinda wanted to throw some leds into the doors where the speakers are so the light kinda pulses thru the holes of the cover.... can i do it the same way? pos to pos, neg to neg?

kinda what i thought too, but i guess it doesn't work that way, i think. i dont have much experience with amps and such, i have seen a few kits that run from the apm, from what i have been told, running lights from your amp is much easier than splicing them into an audio connection. but im not sure. When i tried to just put a pos/neg on the speaker wires it did nothing and my sound was messed up, came out all muffled. So the transistor basically takes the sin wave coming from the radio, and changes it to a linear frequency. but yeah, im not sure on all that, all i know is that this set up works. I also have lights in my speakers, i posted pics on here somewhere of it. looks pretty ba imo. thats where im going to have my lights flashing in.
also, if you did get it to work with pos-pos-neg-neg, your leds would be receiving all the signals(that the speaker your hooking into) is receiving. so it basically stays on all the time, maybe it will flicker a bit. but you need a capacitor with a resistor to make an RC low pass filter, so you only get the bass hits.

Whut? lol i got completely lost when the tech lingo came in....is there a specific resistor to use? what in the hell is a RC low pass filter lol?

oh and im gunna be running an amp to my speakers also, a 4-way Alpine.... do u think the sound on yours was messed up just cause it was taking to much of the power that was running to the speakers?

so the diagram is built for 12v Dc operation from a tower computer. But we want to use this for a car, which is also 12v, but since we all like to pump dat jam, pump pump dat jam, you need to throw a variable resistor to compensate for the extra voltage. this is called a potentiometer, and its just a component that when you turn it the resistance goes up, its the same thing from a guitar, anyways a RC low pass filter allows the frequencies bellow 30hz to pass through. to do this, you put on a capacitor, which sucks up all the higher frequencies. basically, it filters out everything except the bass.

no, the sound was messed up because i was stupid and was doing things wrong lol. this will work fine, even if you run an amp. now the only change you might have to make is the size of the potentiometer(the thing that sucks up all the extra voltage that would otherwise damage your leds) with more power going to the speakers your going to a larger potentiometer to suck up more voltage, but its a really easy change. and sorry i havent figured everything out yet. i know it will all work, i just need to sit down and write the final diy. but its finals time in school so i have been supper buisy lol. but dont worry, i havent forgotten, just been buisy.
