No sir, I'm not a big fan of Atco; besides my transmission is still scattered all across the work bench!
ah sounds fun, is it gonna be ready for the sonic meet this year?

Of course!

it better be ready for sonic
You know it buddy. UPS just dropped of my seals, so I'll be in the garage starting to re-assemble it tonight hopefully. I'll be away for the weekend, but my dad tends to enjoy finishing things up even when I'm not around, so it could be done come Monday; if not, DEFINITELY next week!! :thumbs up

Update:

Got the trans back together, going to spray it with some clear coat tomorrow night and hopefully start putting it back in thursday evening after work. Also got a new (rebuilt) front caliper because mine keeps leaking and I'd rather not have my brakes go out while driving. Painted the caliper tonight.. just waiting to finish this crap up and get the car inspected; oh and wait for a nice day where it's not raining.. I rarely ever take the car out if anything is falling from the sky except for gleaming rays of beautiful sunshine! I've got a few pics, I'll post them up soon.

Update:

Finally managed to edit the few pics that I took while working on the car last week and what not. Guess I'll provide a bit of a walkthrough/commentary for the pictures so ya'll ain't too bored! At some points there's no pics because I was quite lazy.. and it's kind of self explanatory.

Quaife LSD from www.katanmotorsports.com for a great deal... if you need one look them up on here (they are a sponsor) and shoot them a PM!

I got all amped up in the garage as we began to tear the transmission out. Notice I keep my car covered inside the garage.. just because I can!

Walkthrough:

Disconnected the battery, put the front of the car up on jackstands, took off the wheels, removed the lower ball joint bolts and drained the fluid from the trans.

Next removed the starter, front trans mount which attaches under the side frame rail, unbolted the drivers side axle (3 bolts going through a bracket into the back of the block).

Unbolted the clutch slave cylinder from the top of the trans, along with the ground and disconnected the reverse gear sensor before pulling the axles out of both sides of the trans and removing the flywheel cover

Placed the jack under the oil pan to provide support for the motor/trans and then removed the top trans mount followed by the 4 bolts holding the trans to the block. Next wiggled the trans and was able to pull it away from the block and out from under the car (I made SURE to have the car high enough on jack stands so the trans would fit right out from under).

Once on the bench the VSS (variable speed sensor) was removed from the top side of the trans, along with any other brackets. The case was opened after removing the bolts all the way around, followed by the plug on the side of the trans (and the snap ring inside).

Mad sweet JDM bearings yo!

Aerial shot of the work bench/trans opened up ready for it's upgrades:

Here's a shot of the reverse gear which was removed before taking out the mainshaft and countershaft:

A manual is quite important to provide all torque specs.. and of course tell you how to take everything apart and put it back together in working order:

Here's where I removed the reverse gear; it's just 2 bolts and then it slides right out:

Now back on the other side of the trans I removed the 3 bolts holding in the forks/gizmos which move up and down to change gears on the mainshaft:

The next step involves taking the bolt off the top of the mainshaft and then pulling the mainshaft and countershaft out of the trans together careful not to drop/lose anything. Just pull and it all comes off as one whole unit:

The stock differential can now be taken out by pulling straight up:

Please note, when you remove the ring gear (large gear on the bottom of the differential, the bolts are REVERSE THREAD; so in THIS case.. RIGHTY LOOSENS!

Place the ring gear on the LSD and tighten it down; REMEMBER THEY ARE REVERSE THREAD... THE ARROWS ON THE BOLTS INDICATE WHICH WAY TO TURN IN ORDER TO TIGHTEN THE BOLTS.

To get the speed gear off the old differential it must be pressed off (I didn't take pictures) Then make sure you put it on your new LSD in the SAME DIRECTION as you took it off the old one.

With the trans apart I also wanted to install an Integra LS 5th gear. To do this you need to install two gears, one for the mainshaft and one for the countershaft. I orderd BOTH parts from www.acuraoemparts.com and if I remember correctly they were less than $150 total. The part numbers are as follows:

LS 5th gear countershaft: 23461-P80-000
LS 5th gear mainshaft: 23581-P80-000

To install the gear (I forgot pics again) you must press the mainshaft apart.. you just need to take off the top gear and replace it with the new LS 5th one. On the countershaft you can pretty much just pull the bearing off the top and then swap the 5th gear with the new one as well. Make sure you don't lose any washers/rings.. as the trans has so freaking many of them!

All the gears back together ready to be placed back into the trans:

Lastly I ordered some new seals (for the input/output of the axles) as well as some internal trans ones. The synchros looked fine so I decided not to replace those.

Putting everything back together is basically the reverse.. just make sure that the gears shift smoothly before you totally commit to putting it back into the car (just use a screw driver and push/pull the shaft sticking out the back. Any questions just let me know or look in the manual for guidance.

Just need to put the alternator in, hook up the battery, add fluid, put my new caliper on, and go for an inspection and I'll be rolling around yet again at last!!!

Damn I hope someone finds this interesting and worth my while.. people need to get back into my thread. On a side note.. I'm not evening winning the featured ride contest, damn all of you who gave me props on my build and then failed to help me get my car on the banner of this website! Very disappointed... sigh.

You think you're dad could give me a cheap inspection? I would never touch my transmission unless I swap it for a manual. :D

They sure are a bit scary.. but with my dad being a mechanic for like 30 years he knew what he was doing! Yeah.. I got a hair cut recently though.. and I usually wear a hat.

Thanks for the vote! :thumbs up. Definitely should have put an LSD in while you had it apart. I've had my LS 5th gear since Christmas, but I was waiting for my LSD to tear into the trans.

Yeah.. just painting my new caliper and going for inspection later this week.. got something else I'm working on so I'm slacking..

Tell me what kind of camera DAMN!
Just a Nikon D40 DSLR

Update:

LS 5th Gear Comparison:
So I finally got to do some highway driving with my new LS 5th gear installed.. turns out I am VERY impressed. During normal highway cruising at around 70mph BEFORE the LS 5th, my rpms were around 3300-3400. At the same speeds my rpms NOW are around 2000-2300. Most of the time it's around 2000rpm, though sometimes it does chill around 2300 for some reason. I'm very happy with the results, now my engine is under A LOT less strain during highway driving and will even get better fuel economy. It sure sure sucked when this thing was just revving out so high/loud when I was only cruising at 60-70mph before; now I can cruise up to 80 and the car just hums quietly! :thumbs up, this is a MUST HAVE for those with a B16 tranny who do a lot of highway driving!

Before:

After (faster than the before and still only at 2000rpm):
]

That's right, my LS 5th gear gave me an rpm drop of AT LEAST 1000rpms and sometimes upwards of 1300rpms!
