Hi. I am new to this site. I have never owned a Civic myself, was always more into rear wheel drive cars. However, my father has a 99 Civic that he bought several years ago and has been using for his daily driver. He runs the p1ss out of it everywhere he drives it, and much to my surprise it has held up very well. Not only that, but I drive it occasionally, and for a stock econo car, I cant believe how fun it can be to drive. Recently the car has had some minor issues and I have done some work on it myself. I was a mechanic for a while and have worked on a lot of different cars, generally had a good opinion of Honda anyway, and this car lives up to my expectations. It is easy to work on and seems generally well designed. I actually want one of these things to hop up for myself now. Been eyeballing some early 90's cars. I see them go pretty cheap on occasion. Well, enough of my rambling for now.

Well welcome to CC and enjoy your stay(I say that alot). If you had the money, I'd say get a 96-00 civic. They have nice interiors and exteriors, and depending on the trim, actually quite quick. Any older than 96, ur looking into body problems. rust and normal wear and tear. GL with watever u buy.

Thanks for the welcome. I have been reading around here the past week or two and have already picked up a lot of good relevant information to fix and improve our 99, and also to make an informed purchase on a car of my own. WalkingComplex, I agree that 96-00s are nice cars. However, I have really taken a liking to whatever generation was from 92-95. For one thing, here in Maryland, any pre 96 car only has to pass a curb idle for emissions, while 96 and ups need to have the CEL off, which can become quite troublesome when you get into significant modification. The other thing is I am a fairly experienced mechanic and have made decent cars, at least in my opinion, of a couple real basket cases in the past. I like these Civics enough I think it may be worth putting the work in to make a clean car of one of the older ones. I dont want a show car any way. What I really want is to make a good corner carver of one, go to an autocross once in a while.

Yeah Eg is the general term for 92-95 civic hatch and sedan and the 92-95 coupes are generally termed ej1 if that helps at all while your browsing through the site.. I have an eg8 sedan and my only complaint is that I don't have a cup holder lol. Are you looking to get a couple, hatch or sedan? Also do you plan on swapping it when you get it? Oh and welcome!

MistahJuice, thanks, that will help me get started. I like all the 92-95s. If I had to choose I guess the hatch is my favorite, coupe second, sedan aint bad either. I also like the 91 and back hatches. About 6 years ago I was all set to buy a 90 hatch from a co-worker for my first car. It was a nice car, had coilovers, a healthy motor, and a clean body. Only problem was the wiring was a mess, which was nothing I clouldnt have fixed, but apparently it started a fire under his dash. I got to work the morning of the day that I was set to buy the car and found it burned to the ground- so much for that. I have no definite plans for what car to get or what I will do with it. I still have a lot of research to do and some things to take care of before I can actually bring a car home. Most importantly, the money for the car will come from the sale of my Mustang. That will net me at least 5 grand. Mustang was originally going to be my autocrosser, but it didnt pan out. For a Civic, I plan on a fairly cheap initial purchase, so long as the car has not been wrecked hard I can work with it. I will be on here a lot once I bring a car home and get to work on it, especially looking up drivetrain stuff, because I am still mostly in the dark there. I just looked up some pictures of eg8 sedans MistahJuice. Some of those are pretty sharp looking cars. You got a lot done to yours?

I love my pop's 99. Just got done putting motor mount inserts in it this past weekend. The wheel hop was ridiculous before, even on a wet road. Inserts fixed it, but my pop felt how the car shakes and said there is no way, they have to come back out. I think I am going to pull all but the bottom fronts and maybe try an Ingalls stiffy. I told him the car will still shake, but he is willing to try it. I would have just dealt with the shake, not irritating to me at all. However it would eventually turn the car into a rattle trap as everything in the interior picks up frequencies and rattles as rpm and throttle change, which I think was his main concern. As a matter of fact, I took some pictures of the job and was thinking about doing a write up if anyone would want. It was a fairly straightforward job, but I did have some confusion going into it about which parts were for what. I was thinking I could save someone from some of the same troubles I encountered.

5th gens(92-95) are great. But not alot around that are clean or in good shape.

Oh mines not very nice on the eyes yet. Being on a budget I'm actually in the final stages of rebuilding a b18c1 Integra Gsr motor and dropping it into my civic, then I'll begin to focus on the looks lol. I say go with whatever you want, sure in your area there might be some with a little rust (I didn't have to deal with that being in California) but you seem to have the knowledge and tools to do whatever you need to fix it, and $5000 as a starting point with an older civic is plenty in my opinion, I see 92-95's go for 2k and under on craigslist all the time

WalkingComplex, I would not want too clean a Civic, or I might feel bad ripping it apart and turning it into a race car. My Mustang is a 99 v6. I bought it from the original owner for 3 grand. It needed some minor work, but it fixed up quick, and the thing is beautiful clean. It is really fun to slide around on the street, but not as fast as it could be at the autocross. I figured out a budget for it- torque arm, panhard bar, aftermarket K-member, and all kinds of other B.S. just to make it handle decent, and it was just too much to put into a car that may still not be what I wanted in the end. Plus I would have killed the resale value by ripping up the interior and caging it up. As it is I am asking 5800 for it and will be surprised if it does not go fairly quick at that. MistahJuice, I would not feel bad for having a plain looking car, helps keep a lower profile if nothing else, and besides all those Cali cars are clean to start with, aren't they? Other problem with that Mustang was everyone wanted to race me all the time, gets to be a real nuisance sometimes. Not to mention cops were always eyebaling me, even if I was going slow. Md is definitely in the rust belt, we have a serious salt problem here. Get 2 inches of snow and then 4 days later our tax dollars pay someone time and a half to drive a salt truck up the street on Saturday. Point is, a clean car of any type, including a Civic, is a fairly rare find. I would expect any car that has spent its life here to need some significant restoration to clean up decent. My Mustang spent much of its life in Las Vegas, or so I was told, which would explain it being clean and rust free as it is. Craigslist is also my main source for buying and selling cars and used parts. I have seen some Civics for sale in the $2k range that would be a great starting point for me, and even some in running condition that may get through state inspection without too much hassle. You got a build thread going for that eg8?

I do believe that. My pop is 50 year old and has a gray beard, and his Civic is stock looking and quiet, yet something still possesses people to race him. Could have something to do with the fact that the car is generally moving around double the average speed of the rest of the traffic on the road. Just yesterday I accused him of driving it like a race car, to which he responded that he does not drive it that hard and he has had other cars in the past that got run much harder(actually I believe him about the other cars). Literally not two minutes and two stop lights later we are racing a dual exhausted cavalier. What can you say, I guess it can depend on who drives the car and how. One thing I know is that my nissan maxima was faster than the civic or my mustang by a long shot, but it looked like a beat up old piece of junk, and almost no one ever tried to race it. Still, I had to laugh about the cavalier.

welcome to the site. from what i hear if your wanting to go auto cross with it go for a coupe.. the body or frame.. can't remember which.. is stiffer than the hatch although the hatch is lighter but i would think the coupe would corner better. i've got a 93 ex coupe myself.. needs alot of work but up here in the further north parts of canada its pretty hard to avoid road salt too. i personally like the look of the coupes better than the HB's as well.. but thats just my opinion.
