Well, my iPod finally bit the dust and I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. Anybody have any recommendations?

-Disk Space = don't need much, I've only got about 2.7 GB worth of music. 8 would probably be sufficient.
-Price = I don't have a lot to spend. I'm not getting another iPod, because of the high price tag. If there was something around $50, I'd be really happy.
-FM Transmitter compatibility = Kind of an odd one... if you've used it with an FM transmitter and had good results (I know this largely depends on the transmitter, but humor me), please let me know.

Thanks!

Same market as you, my iPod is biting the dust, doesn't hold it's charge as long and sometimes won't charge. Been looking around and came across ARCHOS, they have a few MP3 players that I'm interested in, maybe you will be too? archos.com
I think all of them come with FM transmitter, but are maybe 59.99+?

I just use my phone and have an SD card in it. I can d/l music for free, song ID, make calls, and pick up other stations on it. I don't understand why people want MP3 players and iPods when a phone can do it all if you have the right one.

In my opinion a phone should only be meant to few things. make and receive calls, send txts. Maybe have a GPS feature. That's just me. I hate phones, personally.

I don't want multiple devices. I hate talking on the phone...I use it more for other features. It's like having my laptop in my pocket.

If I had to choose, I'd get a Zune, but it's above your price tag.

I have an old Philips MP3 player. That thing was a damn champ. No matter what happened it just kept on going and going. It got left in the front yard, was soaked in water and frozen, let it sit, a few days later, worked, and has been working for the past 5 years.

iPod shuffle? I've got the older style small ones, 2GB and 1GB, that I used to use when I ran or worked out. Really convenient. They should still be $50 IIRC. That's what I spent at least for my 1GB. Forget how much the 2GB was.

I'd say get a 8gb iPod Touch. Just my opinion. I own a 5th gen 30gb video iPod. Love it but I rarely use it anymore since I just keep putting new music on my CD-RW when I want music in my car.

That and my 2nd gen shuffle that I just found.

iPod touches are too expensive and more than I need. I have an iPhone already, so I don't need all the extra features of the touch, not to mention, I HATE touch screen for an mp3 player.

My main use of my mp3 player is hooked up to my car while I'm driving. I need controls that I can feel and a screen that won't move on me.

I tried using my iphone, but they don't make a good fm transmitter for it. I bought one and it was staticky as s**t. I couldn't find a single one with a decent review when used with the iphone.

Like I said, I have 2.7GB of music, so a 1 or 2GB device won't do it for me. I didn't mention this, but I do want a screen of some sort. It doesn't have to be extravagant... I just want to be able to choose the song I want to listen to. I used to have a really low grade sansa back in the day.. forgot all about it, but it did work really well for what it was (free giveaway).

I'll take a look into the ARCHOS and Phillips. I'm also searching around on craigslist for a decent used ipod.

Thanks for all the recommendations! It gives me a few more options to look at.

FM transmitters are wacky. You have to search for a good station that works well. I used to use a station for probably over a year that had a lot of static after a certain volume. But then one day I finally start searching 0.2 at a time and found a random station that works really well. Almost zero static.

I use a belkin one. I think you can buy them at Walmart. It's really old too, at least 3 or 4 years. Works perfectly. The next thing I want to do is get a headunit with a USB in it so I can just plug in my iTouch and leave it in my car. I have 2 iShuffles, 2 iTouches and an iPhone. It's kind of sad.... I want to start keeping one in the car. But all but the iTouch 4 and iPhone are really old lol.

I had an FM transmitter that I've been using for several years for my iPod, worked great. Found a good station, never had a static issue unless I left town.

Then my iPod died and I tried using my iPhone. I bought one of the fm transmitters that swears they "work with iPhone". I couldn't find a single station that was non staticky (and I went by the .2 all the way through the entire range of radio stations). I did a google search to try to find a good fm transmitter for the iPhone, and they apparently don't exist. Couldn't find a transmitter with any decent reviews for iPhone.

Are you not a fan of Pandora for your phone in place of the transmitter?? I understand you don't like a touch screen for music, but if you already have a nice phone, I just don't get why you wouldn't keep your music on it too, and have it play through the car as well.

I read that and even replied to it. My point is, WHY do you need to listen to the radio, instead of listening to free streaming music that you can create w/ no commercials, just an annoying add every once in awhile? I understand touch screens can be annoying but it just doesn't make sense to me personally to have separate devices.

I mean, while I'm running I can still get my calls, my texts, have all the music I want and the kind I want, and the same w/ driving. Granted, while I'm working out I don't take my calls or texts, but if it's an emergency I'm contacted immediately b/c my friends know to text me if I don't pick up.
To me you're saving money (not that that is an issue w/ you), when you just throw everything on your phone that you always have on you anyhow.

Sorry if I took your thread OT a bit...I'm just trying to understand why people want many devices when a good phone does it all.

I think you're missing the point of an FM transmitter. An FM Transmitter is used to broadcast the music/sound on your device (iPod, iPhone, etc) through a temporary FM frequency... allowing the music from your device to be heard through your car stereo system.

In other words - you play a song on the iPod and it comes out of your car speakers. The problem with the iPhone is that either A) it puts out so much interference that an FM transmitter can't overpower it or B) A compatible, powerful FM transmitter just hasn't been created for it yet. This is why I cannot use the iPhone.
