Fuel Pump

On a normal day I'll turn my key to the "on" position, wait for the check engine light to click off and then crank my car. Takes all of 2 seconds. I've done some reading up and apparently that's normal. Well lately when I turn my key to on, the check engine light just stays there, because the fuel pump isn't kicking in. I checked the fuse and relay and both are fine. After plugging these back in, making sure they weren't loose the problem disappeared for a week or two. Now it's back. It only happens MAYBE once a day. Like in the mornings when I get up after the car's been sitting all night. If the fuse and relay are both fine, and the wiring seems to be fine, could my fuel pump just be going out?

I had to resolder my main relay in my mustang..the relay itself was good but the connections going to it were bad,,i had to wiggle it to get the fuel pump to start...and to stop..

You're positive the CEL is related to the fuel pump, yes? And not some code that gets thrown when the car is warmed up...

Yeah, it's not a CEL when the car is running. Only when the key is turned to "on" not when the car is cranked.

I turn my key to the on position, wait a second for the fuel pump to kick in, the CEL goes off and I can crank my car. The problem is that it doesn't want to go off sometimes.

Lol, alright, I gotta get in touch with my dad to get his soldering kit. Thanks for the in-depth DIY directions though, I'll let you know how it all pans out

SO, almost a month later and I finally got around to checking the relay. The relays fine, proper solder, etc. So now that that's eliminated, I'm thinking fuel pump. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday and that helped with the way the car ran, but not this problem.

Yeah, sounds like the fuel pump to me...I was going to say fuel filter, but you've already taken care of that.
