I've been using rit dye for years, your gonna need to soak the carpet for at least 24 hours if your doing black. if not you might end up with a weird brownish grayish tone.

If your gonna do a crazy color like red or green your gonna want to heat the water. so get a metal trash can and set it on a turkey fryer or another heat source for about an hour or longer depending on how dark you want the color

I did it with my carpet still in the car. First I took a plastic spray bottle and filled it with a 50/50 bleach and water mix. Took out the seats and sprayed the carpet to bleach out the gray. Let it sit for a few days to make sure it dries. Then mix the Rit dye in the same spray bottle with Cold salt water. The cold and salt will allow the dye to stay in the carpet if it gets wet later. Vary your dye to water mixture to get the acquired color. Spray the carpet and take a soft vinyl brush and rub it in. Wait a few more days for it to dry or use fans etc. If you do not, the dye could leak onto your shoes etc. and also possible mildew. Other than that no other smells associated. Cost me a total of like 10 bucks and now I have red carpet!!!
