1998 Civic EX Sedan 1.6L

Just got this civic, live in California and have to get it smogged, however it has headers on it and can't be smogged. I am looking at getting replacement exhaust manifold and tail pipe in order to pass smog. I went the JY today and realized I needed more information: What years are compatable? Will exhaust off off 2.2l also fit or does it have to come off of a 1.6l? Where are the part numbers located on the manifold? How many O2 sensors are there on the OEM system.
This is the first Honda I have owned, so just getting into how they are put together and which models interchange with others.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

lets see... the engine you have is a d16y8 so pretty much any d-series exhaust manifold will "work" because d-series engine parts are for the most part interchangeable, but that doesnt me it line up correctly. what you need is an exhaust manifold from a 96-00 ex (the hx, dx and lx models had a different 2 piece set up with an intagrated cat on the lower half). as far as "the best place to find one" goes, whore up craigslist and your local salvage yards and you should be able to find one for dirt cheap. also there are 2 o2 sensors that you'll need. one is connected at the end of the down pipe, right before the cat and the second one is connected right after the cat.

@Speedy: Thanks. that helped out.

So in order to find parts for this EX model I have to pretty much stick to Civic EX's, Accords and other type of Civic's are going to be a little bit different?!? Of course the JY I went to had all kinds of Accords and very few Civic's. :( Will have to keep looking.

im not 100% sure but i think the the 92-95 ex exhausts are the same as the 96-00 manifolds

^ not sure about that one.
If its hard to find and youd like to keep header instad of going back to stock manifold, you could buy a carb approved header will come with sticker and all,

Okay, went to the JY today and spent Waaaay to much time there. Looked at I don't know how many cars, looking for an exhaust manifold. I now know I have a D16Y8 engine, but couldn't find a single one there!! Found a D16A6 and was going to use the manifold off of it and hope it would fit, but found that manifold to have a long crack in it. So it was off to hunting again.

Had to settle on a D15 manifold, hopefully it will fit. I looked up the gasket set and it is the same as mine, so I think it should work. Will find out tomorrow, if I have time to switch them out.

Went to put it all together today and found it was close, but not close enough. The manifold bolts right up, no problems. However the down pipe is right up against the bottom of the oil pan and is about two inches from reaching the cat.
Also had grabbed the brackets off of the D15, with hopes of using them on the D16. Not so much, they didn't even come close to fitting.
So I am back to where I was.

Are the D16 and D15 manifold different lengths? Or do I just need to get the correct down pipe and run the D15 manifold?

Is there an easy way to tell the year of the car? I am used to looking at the sticker inside the door, but the Honda's I have looked at don't seem to have any there.

Is there a listing somewhere identifying what makes had the D16Y8 engine installed in them?

I know there are alot of questions here, I am still trying to figure out all this engine coding stuff.

The d15 mani n down pipe r shorter then then the d16. The d16 mani looks like a header. 4 - 2 then 1 right before the cat. The y8 was found in 96-00 honda civics.

Thanks!!! Even answered my next question. I was wondering if the orginial manifold was a 4 - 2 or 4 - 1. As you stated the D15 is a 4-1. I had been looking on the web and found the D16 was a 4 -2, or at least it seemed that way. Now I feel I am getting somewhere in this hunt....

Will have to go back to the JY and look somemore!! Hopefully they got some more cars in, cause I really believe I have looked at everything they had at the time.

Thanks again!!!

Well let me know. The manifold I showed u is the one I'm trying to get rid of. If u want it ill take a run to the jy to grab the down pipe. I'm sure we can work out a deal

Hey HiDesertRat, what part of the HD are you from? I'm in Victorville. Junkyards up here are pretty useless for civic stuff, as they get stripped really fast.
When I bought my EK, my stock manifold was cracked. I searched high and low for a decently priced stock replacement. They're tough to find! I ended up settling with a DC Sports 4-2-1 header for $350 on eBay. I have a buddy up here that might have a stock D16y8 manifold he's willing to part with (I think it's off an ex, too). I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow and get more info.

That would be great!!! I went to about five yards Wednesday and only found two EX's, both were missing manifold and down pipe. I'm in 29 Palms. If he has the parts let me know, maybe we could work a deal.

I hit him up, and unfortunately, the 1st cylinder runner has a huuuge crack in it :(. I guess he threw it out. Your best bet would be a DC sports header or something. Sorry about that man :(.

NP, story of my life. Thanks for the effort.

Went on the look for a gasket, so I can at least put the headers back on and drive the car. Again, unable to find a damned gasket for the headers?!?!?! Guy at Autozone said he thought these were DC headers, but there isn't a stamp on them. Need to get the flat gasket with two exhaust ports and three stud holes. Looked at all kinds of vehicles, books and even went through all their box's of gaskets just looking for one to match up. Got one close, will modify it and see if it will work. Any idea of the part # for this gastket, the one from exhaust manifold to downpipe? The headers or the downpipe don't have the recessed rings, they are both flat, so can't use the normal two ring method.

Thanks again......

Also if you really want to stick with the mighty D16 - You can get a valve job done and a cam - I hear that doing that will gain maybe an extra 20 hp - Then again I'm a noob and must keep doing research... I'll let ya know either way.. I think a stage 2 would suffice, I hear stage 3 crower cams are for 500 + Hp
