Removing spark plugs 1995 honda civic lx

I am having trouble removing the spark plugs in my 1995 honda civic lx 1.5 litre engine. The 5/8" socket does not seat itself onto the spark plugs even while using an extension. When I look in the cavity it appears there is a rubber liner interfering. Should I just press the wrench down harder? What am I doing wrong. The socket fits properly onto the manufacture's recomended replacement spark plugs no problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You need a spark plug socket if you're not using one. They're longer and magnetic so once the spark plug is loose, it sticks to the socket. It's not THAT strong but enough to slowly pull the spark plug up and out.

if its a rubber liner its either the spark plug cable boot or another spark plug socket rubber thats inside the socket...

this was my thinking... the rubber is there to grab the spark plug so that once you loosen the plug and pull the socket up, the plug will come up with it.
if the socket is fairly new its possible the rubber is a little tight so try and push down a little further to seat the top of the spark plug into the rubber. try rotating the spark plug back and forth a little while pushing down so that when it goes down the socket also matches up with the hex
