Intake and Exhaust Questions

I've been doing some searching the past week to upgrade a home-made intake (from previous owner) on my '99 Civic Sedan and the stock exhaust. Googled a bit but didn't find the right answers: So far I've come across these two:

AEM Short Ram Intake from ClubCivic: http://www.clubcivic.com/store/aem-short-ram-air-intake-22-413_p2483.html

the Apexi WS2 from Weaksauce: http://www.weaksauceparts.com/store/product.php?productid=16347&cat=710&page=1

Will the intake fit on the d16y7 throttle body as I see in this photo? I understand that the "Actual product my vary from image(s)" but still worry.

Will the Apexi WS2 fit on a Civic Sedan? I understand that the Civic 96-00 Coupe and Sedan are the same size lengthwise but unsure if the undercarriage of the two are any different.

If there are any recommendations on a better quality/priced intake and exhaust, please let me know. I don't want to cheap anything out and not spend too much for something unnecessary. I have come to like the WS2 because it sounds clean instead of annoyingly farty like the others i've read/watched/heard.

What are your goals here?

You'd gain a lot more power by switching to a y8 manifold, or swapping the engine.

For the cost of an AEM intake and an apexi WS2 catback, you could probably get a b18/b20 swap and you'd be a lot faster than you ever will be even with $2,000 of bolt ons on your d16y7.

And no, the intake must be DX/CX specific to work on your car. That's the world plenum/throttle body design ever, and as I said above you would benefit greatly from swapping the manifold.

Oops. I thought I mentioned it but didn't. I only plan doing a Y8 head swap or a b20 swap from my families junked 98 CRV (or I just fix the CRV)
It would be using the b20 block and b16 head right?, since the b20 head and intake manifold won't fit under the hood or something? I only read up a little on engine swaps so I don't really know much. I thought doing the b20 swap would cost more that's why I wanted to do the $700 bolt-on route temporarily, also because I wanted to prepare my Civic for a school car show in late May and sale the parts later after I do a swap. What are the prices for Y5 full, Y8 head, b20 swaps, if I'm not already asking too much. Thanks for the mind-opener there; don't want to be all aesthetics and pretty much stock performance; really appreciate it.

edit: btw I saw your Suspension post in your signature; that's the drop i'm looking for; Progress CS2 Coilovers right? Absolutely love it!

Well, I've got some news for you. Shy of tearing the block apart, or adding a turbo, you're never going to be happy with the performance of a d-series. Period. It's extremely difficult to extract any power out of them without forced induction or high compression pistons. You'd spend ~$3,000 making ~150-160whp with a high strung engine and a cam for the d-series. You could do a reasonable swap for that and not have to run race gas.

I would do everything you can to get the b20 swap in there. There will not be any issues with fitment if you use the b16 head and intake manifold. b20vtecs are really good motors if done correctly. Plenty of people making 220+whp and 160ft/lbs of torque with pretty mild modifications. Here's some information on it:

And BamBam on honda-tech has a really good thread about it, I'd link it to you but honda-tech is down this morning.

Long story short, intake/exhaust on a d-series is money down the toilet.

Alright, so no adding onto the D-series since they're somewhat restricted although I've seem some people pull good times on them all-motor though but I don't think i'd want to go through that stress

Wow, I guess i'll just be saving up for a B-series swap then, rather than throw out some cash on bolt-ons; I guess i'll just get a new radiator and those Progress CS2's for now since my radiators going bad and I like that drop you posted.
I honestly really appreciate it man, you probably saved me from a crapload of problems in the future.Honda-tech is working for me now actually so I'll try to find it.

Anytime. Glad I could help. A lot of us "older guys" have wasted a lot of time on useless parts. FOR YEARS people learned the hard way that bolt ons on a d-series were pointless. It's a really tragic way to spend money.

crash!

Avi, pull your socks up.

I agree with ek forever. However, if you really wanted you could get a catback exhaust that you could use on the new motor, depending on what you get. I have a D series and I have my Buddy Club exhaust and I just plan on using it when I get my B. But I'm not going to buy a header for it. And if you realllllly want to put an intake on it. You can always get an eBay intake, toss the crap filter it comes with, and put a nicer filter on it (K&N, Spectre isn't too bad either).

I'm not trying to steal ek's thunder whatsoever. I completely agree with adding mods to a D series is a waste. However if you can buy parts that will cross over to the B series, I don't see why not :what: correct me if I'm wrong.
