'99 Civic Hatchback DX (Canada)

Hi guys,

I'm looking to make my first purchase. I like the way the Honda Civic Hatchback looks and thought I should probably start out in the 6th generation series (trying to learn manual). I currently have my eyes set on a '99/00 civic hatchback DX.

Also he has mentioned he's not the mechanic 'type' of guy so he doesn't know what to replace and what not (I'm not either, but I read that its a good thing to know about since you wanna know about the car and the driver).

He says he bought this car in 2002, been driving it since, everything is bone-stock except things he changed. So timing belt, alternator and clutch still the same and have been running for 313k.

My questions are: At what price should I pay for this car?
Should I be worried about timing belt, clutch and alternator? (I'm probably going to use it for a year or two.)
Possible upgrades to make my ride more smooth (not necessarily more powerful)?

Thanks, sorry for the amount of questions - I'm fairly new to buying cars. I do have a buddy helping me out and checking out the car since he drives manual, but I wanted to know from the civic community what they think of the vehicle in general.

310k kilometers and it still has the original timing belt...? That can't be.... That's something that's usually replaced every 90-110k (miles), depending on the style of driving.

If EVERYTHING works good... It's mechanically sound and performs well, there isn't (much) rust, bushings/boots/etc. are good..... Hmmm I would say anywhere between $2500 and $4000 (if it's REALLY mint). It's a DX after all so you don't get any power options (to my knowledge).

If you can, get any service / maintenance records.

That cluster (the speedometer/fuel level/temperature) isn't stock with 96-00 Hatchbacks
As far as I know, the 96-00 Civic Hatchbacks only came in CX/DX models.
That cluster is from an EX coupe or sedan, so it being under 300k miles could be false; could be more or less.

Who's going to help you test drive it?
I didn't know how to drive standard when I got mine so I brought my mother and she said it was a good ride. although, the problems of my car came up a week after. Overheating, aircon ran out of freon, windows were difficult to roll up and down; etc; So be careful for that.

Anyways, I agree with JohnS., between $2000-$4000 .
The KBB value at EXCELLENT condition is $4,200, so $4,000 should be your maximum unless there are more quality after-market components we're unaware of, but still/

No, in Canada the DX hatchbacks are fully loaded ( A/C, and color matched mirrors, and rear spoiler), no power options, but the Guage cluster is stock, all Canadian DX's have a tach/ temp set up like that, only the CX's have the speedo/temp/gas gauges!

Ohh wow. I didnt know tdot meant toronto.ontario.. -.- Canada gets the Acura EL and better DX's.

Haha, no problem, our SI is your guys EX, and our SIR is your guys SI. In the States is the CX fully loaded, or the DX?
