My speedo is wack some times it works? Some times it's way off and some times it jumps all over! And some times it just dont work... No cel I've seen in some posts that I will get a cel if the vss is bad but wouldn't that be obd2? Obd 1 can't tell that can it? I'd like some further diagnosis to finger out what's causing it when it doesn't work neither dose the the odometer.. Thanks in advance butch

Does the CEL work?

Both OBD1 and 2 have code 17 for the VSS.

It's probably a speedo problem if no code is thrown. Make sure that screws on the rear of the speedo are not too tight.

Ya know it doesn't come on when I turn the key on... I should read the codes see if there is any... It would act like that?

replace the cluster, the problem is instrumentation. I had same symptoms, no codes, jumping needle. I just bought a cluster off of craigslist and works perfectly. Also fixed my cruise control shutting off problem too.

BTW> cluster is a cinch to replace, 4 screws to get at it. unhook 3 electrical connectors in back of it. No speedo cable to worry about.

Sweet ur odometer work when the speedo is? Cuz mine Dorset some times either lol...

It does sound like something has gone haywire with the cluster.
Replace it but be sure to keep your old one just to have on hand for parts.

This tells you that the CEL doesn't work. Check whether a previous owner removed the CEL bulb.

Even if a trouble code were thrown, this^ is exactly what you'd be falsely led to believe if your CEL has been disabled.
