I'm new and need help!! CV axle??

Okay so today I was driving and I ran over a huge screw When I went to put my spare tire on, there was a whole bunch of grease and oil all over and a mechanic told me that my cv axle is busted. My question is, why did my axle go out? Is that for sure what's wrong with my car? I never heard any kind of clicking or anything so what would make it go out so suddenly? And did my flat tire have anything to do with it? Anything helps, thanks.

the boots wear out and break open. its normal just get it replaced before it dries out and starts clicking. really easy and fairly inexpensive flat tire highly doubtful that was the cause just normal wear and tear.
