Best job I ever had was with a lawn maintenance crew.
Driving from job to job, riding and maintaining the mowers, trimming, being outside and working at more or less our own pace(within reason).

I absolutely LOVED that aspect of my landscape job. If I won the lottery, I'd probably buy a sweet zero turn mower and do that for a bit lol.

My parent's are absolutely against landscaping though. They told me to never ever go back to that job, no matter what.

I have a part time job at a barbecue restaurant. Family owned so a fair bit of drama but it's not so bad and the discounted food is nice. But then again I'm only 18 and I don't pay rent

I think so too, truck, trailer, a zero turn, push mower, leaf blower and a nice trimmer.
I loved these style Grasshoppers, they'd go anywhere and with the front mount deck could get under shrubs and brush!

Hmm… landscaping brings up an interesting idea. I think it would be hard to get in with a landscaping crew around here without speaking Spanish and having limited availability but maybe working at a nursery would be a possibility. My 9-5 has me sitting in a cubicle all day so being outside would be nice and I know they tend to be busier on weekends so they might just be willing to let me work weekends only. I'll have to look into that and get a few applications. It would be cool to learn a little bit about it too.

What's your Masters in? ?
I wound up getting my BS in applied developmental psych and my MA in psychology. Problem being that there are no jobs for either of those degrees unless know someone with an in or get extremely lucky with a state job. I'm in the process of a career change for a while but let me be the first to tell you, don't believe everything schools tell you...

'If you don't get a Bachelors, you'll never have a good job. If you stay in hard sciences (was a biochem major) there will be no job for you, switch to liberal arts. If you don't get you MA, your BS is going to be useless, but think of the jobs! If you really want a good job though, your MA is pretty useless, probably need to go get you PsyD or you PhD.'

I'm still bitter, yes. As far as the two jobs things goes, don't do what I do. Don't think you'll be fine working yourself 60+ hours a week with a day off once every other week. You won't, alas, nobody is. The mental wear and tear plus the physical lack of sleep/friend interaction is killing me slowly. Luckily I trust in my avatar so somehow, everyday ends up being ok in the very end.

That sucks, I know universities don't always paint a realistic picture of the job market.

Baker - Never used one of those. The company I worked for had 60" Toro Zero Turns. I think one was a 61 or 62.

cgp - plants are fun.. I worked at a nursery for 2 years. Learned very basic / general stuff about plants. Watering, planting, transplanting, what kind of soil to use, etc. Fun stuff to know. I used to know tons of names of flowers and junk but lost it all slowly over the years :(.

Yeah I'm liking the nursery idea. It would be nice too since I'm hoping to get a house this summer, what I learn could be useful right away. I'm going to get a few applications and see what happens.

I responded to a couple of ads about freelance design work the other night too so we'll see what happens there.

i did this last summer and loved it, but was hired as a self contractor so it ended up paying like s**t

Because Asia?

try looking into companies that clean repossessed homes. past summer i had a job cleaning out the houses till they were in "sellable" condition and then having to maintain the lawn and inside. you have to be willing to get dirty and do some nasty ass work at times, but then there are days that are easy. worse part was sweeping and cleaning the basements, some houses were disgusting enough that i wont even go into details, and times where i wanted to throw up.

but i gotta say that job changed me, i dont even think about getting dirty anymore, doesnt phase me at all to be covered in filth. And i enjoy physical work. plus you got to see some very interesting stuff, and you can keep anything in the house that you want. there is some cool s**t. but you also come across horrible things, they were quite sad.

just an idea and a description. i overall enjoyed it and if i found a company that didnt hire as a self contractor i would do it again. you just cant think about what your doing and just do it
