fitting 3 car seats across a bench seat is going to be a tight squeeze in any car... even a suburban (my moms old ride)

because space will be tight, front facings aren't the smallest things, rear facings are smaller (both of these you know already) so trying to fit three kids with there own seats might not be comfortable for your son in the booster

when picking out my car now i made sure comfort would be number 1 for the back passengers/my son..little did I know the comfortable front facing seats are huge and take up little more than one seat already

tell your wife she doesn't need a new car and get something new and up to date with good safety features. u don't want to be carrying around your kids in a car that's over 10 years old. nothing with a 3rd row though.

your wife can get a cheap car for driving to work.
1st generation CR-V's received only a marginal overall safety rating, so they would not be an optimal choice for a family vehicle.
even if it got a good safety rating in the early 2000's that;s 10 years ago. standards higher these days. i doubt cars that old would score as well as they previously did. even 5 years ago is a long time.

i would get a honda fit though. the current model has an absurd about of space inside and its not too expensive and pretty good on gas. and there's a huge market for them as well.

Did you read the price range restriction mentioned by the OP? He preliminarily limited his choices 1st gen CRV or 98-02 Forrester. Among these two choices, the Forrester clearly has the best safety rating:

01 CRV

02 Forrester

im not being too picky but the older scion xb's have like 105 hp and new ones are fugly id rather have a fit. my wife will prob keep the van as long as it can last. im up and down on cars so who knows what i want. might just get a newer accord for me, just gonna miss the small manuverable civics. have had the most luck with honda and cant speak as well for other brands. When it comes down to it i hate automatics and refuse to drive one for my next car.

97+ 4runner.

They can be found with reasonable miles in denver for around 5k and its a toyota!

What more can u want?
only have had 2 toyotas and they were old ass corollas dont know much about them but im not going to spend 15,000 on a newer car just to get a little better mpg and i plan on fishing alot again. 3rd gen 4runners are nice its just the 2nd gen i hear horrible things about. and since i made this thread i havent heard really one person agree with another one one certain vehicle lol.

OP, you seem confused and all over the map. That's why the responses are so varied. The first step is for YOU to decide the purpose of this second car and how much YOU want to spend on it. This way, you'll get the most helpful input from members.

Is this list still correct? Is it ranked in order of importance?

1) About $5000
2) Accommodates three car seats
3) Good gas mileage
4) Good safety rating

well to be honest i dont know what i want for sure thats why i asked for opinions on personal experiences not suggestions on what to get and thats it. yes i want safety yet i have never been in a accident in my life and that doesnt mean i wont. room which is nice but this will not be the primary vehicle. reliability, and i hate honda for this because they are always over priced and most cars that have room are clearly underpowered. im not saying i want to build or boost anything which would be dumb of me as a dd just want to have a little fun with it not much and i dont want crawl to get into the damn thing and go 2 mph through dips/bumps etc... im done with that s**t.

Opinions will be all over the map until you clearly define your needs, goals, and price range. Otherwise, this will just become an exercise of personal opinions without regard for the car that fits your needs.

i got it! why don't u just let your wife decide for you since you can't choose
.
i talked with my wife and she is happy with whatever i get however im not a selfish d**k who wants a sports coupe that why i asked for opinions on personal experiences no offense directly at you. and this is turning into a tom and jerry episode now between u and ron, s**t is hilarious though. and if my wife chose for me id prob have a prius and paint my nails too but i run the house and i like talking to people on here...........................at least i use too till it turned into a script from jerry springer!
