Is the car supposed to be this slow?

Every time i turn on the ac in my car the car becomes notacibally slower and much less responsive, its much more noticeable when in normal conditions, but barely noticeable on the highway. Is this normal? by the way i have a 1999 civic ex coupe stock no mods.

Pretty much, you can go from a dead stop and punch it, as the RPMs are climbing flip on the a/c and you will feel the car just loose a good chunk of power. Most modern cars have the a/c tied into the TPS so as you floor it, the a/c clutch is disengauged till you let off, or resume normal driving conditions.

No wonder so many people take out a/c and power steering on their hondas. I say this because I was on the highway going 60mph in 4th then I shift up to 5th revs go from 4000 to 2000 speed decreased by 2 which was 58 then I stepped on it to get it up, and it stayed within 58-60 for about 10 seconds. Good thing there was quite a distance between me and other cars.

You don't necessarily have to remove A/C and P/S. You can just cut the belts. But yeah, welcome to the world of Honda's.

You live in San Antonio. I'll do the count down for how long you'll last there without A/C.

Don't forget that you own a reliable economy car that should get reasonable gas mileage. If you need power, start researching engine swaps and forced induction ($$), or buy a different car ($$).

My civic is slow.
I miss my ac. But gsr swap on a budget = no ac :( I live in Houston and its hell. Especially after working in a warehouse all day and driving home in traffic. I'm about to buy a full size fan for my backseat haha

I haven't had working A/C in a few years. It rarely gets above 100 but it gets close. And it gets incredibly humid which makes it 100x worse.

You learn to deal with it eventually. But like Ron said, if you want something with more power, buy an engine swap or another car. Honda's are econo-cars.

IMO, A/C is a luxury. I Removed mine from my Civic. I regret that. When i was younger i had Tunnel Vision. It was not worth it, Not one signle bit.

Today, nothing will talk me into removing A/C out of car.
Today, you have to pay me $ to remove my A/C

AC is a necessity where I live from late spring to early fall. We've already seen 102* here. Summers easily get up to 115* - 120*. Not quite sure why I live here sometimes. Oh yeah, winter we usually have constant 50's to 70's...that's why most people bear the brutal summer.

Having the a/c still in the car does really cost you much if any hp. It's only when you turn it on that you get the load on the motor. People that remove A/c are just poor and can't afford the repair.
