Folding@Home Chimp Challenge

I am posting this thread to make a request of the great community here. As well as being a Civic lover I am a big computer enthusiast too. As a result of this I got involved with the Folding@Home distributed processing project.

The team I fold for are currently in a race with other folding teams around the world and amazingly we are winning. However to keep it that way we need to recruit which is why I have come here to see if there are any members that are willing to come join us. The race will finish on Friday 25th at midnight. If you are interested please go here to the Overclockers forum where we have a race info thread (Link) There is a great group of people there who will help you set up.

If you have any question please post here or PM me and I will be glad to help. =)

:haha:

I might join tonight. I played around with the folding program after I finished building my rig. I didn't realize people made a competition out of it

I'm running the GPU version, but it is only using one card. How do I configure it for 2 cards? (GTX 460's)

*edit*
nevermind. I found the help page for setting up multi-gpu rigs :thumbs up

I think I joined.. how do I know if I was successful in joining the team or not. I entered the team number (32) and the passcode (the long one listed on OC).. and I made my username joe7987. Is there anything else I need to do? Did I have to put T32monkeys somewhere? I haven't used FAH for... years. I used it a bit when it first came out, but that's it.

EDIT: And now I notice that you listed a passkey for the team, and I have a passkey for my username.. which one do I enter?

you need to enter T32monkeys as your username, team number is 32 and the passcode is 3311d92fd7ee331bd66dfe6eea01708b. So Joe, you need to change your username.

Thanks for joining guys. I'll make sure you're listed on the guest list and feel free to introduce yourselves over there. My name is the_cultie over there :-)

sohclubkid, I'll find the info for you asap.

Woke up this morning to check on the status, found both GPU folding slots were failed. Forgot to change my power settings so the pc went to sleep 3 hours into folding :smackself. Funny thing is the SMP kept going

That was a bit strange. Also, change the power settings so that windows doesn't put the monitor into standby. This can cause the gpu to stop and sometimes fail. For the next couple of days I suggest turning off the monitor manually

Im a relatively smart person and have no f**king clue what that wikipedia article said lol.

So you're volunteering your computer for this company to use so they can figure out what happens to a protein?

What do YOU get for doing it?

Lol. It's in the name of scientific research for treatment of diseases by Stanford. There's no reward other than knowing you put your computer toward something useful and productive. However, apparently people have made team based competitions out of it. Whether or not there's rewards within the teams is a question I can't answer, but it would be pretty cool if there was.

That's it exactly. There's no rewards within the teams but we like to make a race out of it every year just for pure fun and it also results in extra processing being done in the 10 day period that would normally be done.

The have made some great breakthroughs with the project. For example, they made a major discovery relating to Alzheimer's Disease.

Prof. Vijay Pande said:
One major result is in the area of Alzheimer's Disease (paper #95). It is believed that Alzheimer's Disease results from the misfolding of the Abeta peptide. Understanding how Abeta misfolds could give us some key insights into how to cure Alzheimer's Disease. This paper experimentally tests a key prediction made in an earlier paper (paper #58: "Simulating oligomerization at experimental concentrations and long timescales: A Markov state model approach" by Nicholas W. Kelley, V. Vishal, Grant A. Krafft, and Vijay S. Pande. J. Chem. Phys. 129, 214707 (2008); DOI:10.1063/1.3010881). In this paper, we show experimentally that there appears to be a beta turn in the Abeta as predicted. This leads to a very stable form of misfolded Abeta which could be used as a starting point for a new Alzheimer's therapy. We are heavily pursuing this research direction at the moment.
