Still learning about cars but begging to learn my way around the engine, i want a cold air intake for more horsepower and the stock air filter isn't getting nearly as much air as it could, what kind of cold air intake's would you recommend around 70$? lol thanks! i got a 2000 civic hx btw

intakes aren't really going to give u a noticeable increase in horsepower. u might as well just get a nice drop in air filter for your current box and make sure the area in the fender where it draws in air is clean and free of debris

Ill take 10 horse power if thats what ill get, the one i have now is like rediculous it sucks in hot engine air which i know it always will but there a peice of plastic an inch above it i was thinking to cut down the pipe that sucks inthe air a little lower so it can get more air but im just gunna get a cold air intake there fairly cheap if you get cheaper ones anyways.

If you want to sweep the water off the streets and possibly hydrolock your engine (unless you get a air bypass valve which is another ~$20) go ahead and get a CAI setup.... It's not really helpful only possibly problematic.
You can just get a cheap ebay short ram (or continue to use the stock airbox) and throw in a K&N filter. A new intake for a daily driver stock engine would only give you some added sound, powers out of the equation.

If this helps...I just took a CAI off my 98 dx hatch due to a bad scare of hydrolock when i hit 2 small puddles & felt water on my bypass. Also I wrote down the math of MPG, im currently tryng to get the most out of mine & i lost almost 50 miles a take when switching to a CAI vs stock. I can also safely say that I never saw any "power gain", justa loud hiss. & last.. i had a burb or somthing when I swtched gears or outa gear & somehow swaping intakes seemed to fix it. GL with ur mods..Jw to share what i just had to do & that 70$ u can spend on smothing that will realy help

u might get 1-2 hp out of the engine. and it will be louder than the stock airbox.

^ first hand experience; nice write-up.
$70 can well be spent on a proper complete tune-up

So wth is the point of a cold air intake and why does everybody have them? I'm pretty sure it has some affect on it especially because of how bad the stock air box is, I'm going to get one regardless lol I already have done a tune up on it.

good advertising and its inexpensive so lots of people can afford it. it changes how your car sounds just like an exhaust will but isn't going to do anything noticeable other than that.

The myth of cold air intakes is that it picks up "cold air" because i'm sure your middle school science lessons taught you "warm air rises, cold air falls" hence the reason it's installed lower to the ground/road. But water is also found towards the ground in puddles, pools, etc; which is why on a daily driver, it shouldn't be even recommended. I'm not too sure about how it works on drags but for track use, CAI and velocity stacks are, I assume, preferred because the built engines will need the best air possible to scratch off even a fraction of a second. I'm not too sure about all of this though, apologies in advanced.

that's not the reason at all. they're mounted where there is space outside the engine compartment which generally just happens to be near the bumper. the temperature differences between the top of your hood and right off the ground is nothing.

cold air is denser than warm air. meaning you get more air inside the engine for more fuel to mix with and make more power. that's the reason there are inter coolers on forced induction cars. to cool the hot compressed air

seriously CAIs are fine on cars unless u plan on fording some deep water. u can get a bypass valve if u want to be a little bit safe. it just won't make much of a difference on a honda in terms of usable power.

also since a CAI is mounted lower the filter will get dirtier faster than a stock airbox or a short ram intake

I live in az we don't get much water here, but I think I'm going to get a short ram intake and have a piece of PVC coming from my bumper to my intake. Would that be even worse when it comes to horsepower?

That would do absolutely nothing and isn't a good idea at all
You are going to get maybe 1-2 hp on a DX which is like nothing just get a cheap eBay short ram intake and a good filter and call it a day cause in the end it won't matter and you are just throwing your money away. Other cars a cai performs better but the civic stock air box is quite efficient. Want more hp go turbo

the HX actually has a different engine. i believe is a d16y5 with vtec-e which gives it about 9hp more than the DX at a slightly lower rpm than the DX makes it's peak power.

seriously the best option imo is just to get a nice drop in filter for your stock box. and save up for something else.

..and remove the resonator box that blocks that area behind the front bumper.
Save your money and do this.

Leave your stock air box, get a drop in filter and remove the lower section of the air box assembly and replace it with ducting connected to the air box and to the fog light receiving cut out (the round one on the back of 6th gen bumpers)... you'll get better air flow, no obnoxious noise, no water in your intake and spend $10 at home depot in hose clamps and ducting....

you won't see much power gains in any intake system.

Can I negative rep this dumb kid? Seriously CAI do basically nothing except appeal to tards becaue they'r cheap and blinky oh and the high possiblities of hydro locking your engine. Ask me how I know...
