One day out of the blue my thermostat shot to hot and after having a fairly long drive home, the coolant in the resovior was boiling and steaming. Has a fairly new radiator and is not leaking anywhere. Any ideas that could help me out? This happens two days before I had planned to sell the car and cant afford an expensive fix.

Also the check engine light has came on.

^^ let those guys know, lol
When the car is warm, if the lower hose isn't as near as warm as the upper hose, then it's possibly a thermostat issue.
Reason is, the thermostat opens up to allow coolant flow through the lower hose at a certain temperature, if the thermostat is defective, then there would be no flow. Warm up the car, feel the hoses.
